Best Option to Get into working in Computer Industry

Good evening. Like to pursue a career in computer Industry and IT.

I was doing a course from an online University to get some course and credits, however it is quite expensive.

I would like to know if there are any other ways that one can do to become a valuable asset in the computer industry?

Is a university degree in Computer Science really mandatory?

Or can one look into doing online certification courses etc.

Or just learn the skills on own such as C++ etc?

Thanks all, I would love to hear all your feedback.

As a Programmer Analyst for the state of Florida, let me give you my 2 cents of advice:

Go to sites like Monster.com or Careerbuilder.com and search for computer-related jobs in your town or region. Look for the minimum job requirements which are listed. What are the most requested skills right now? SQL? .NET? C#? Oracle? SQL Server? Java? Perl? Just take a dozen jobs and write down all the requirements and skills, and see which skills are requested the most.

I know that currently, in Florida, there is a high demand for people who know the Microsoft .NET framework and who can program in C# and ASP.NET. And you can learn these languages right now, today, for FREE, by going to the Microsoft website, and by downloading the Visual Studio 2010 Express Edition programs along with SQL Server 2008 Express Edition. You can also find free tutorials and videos for them, if you search for them on the microsoft website and on www.learnvisualstudio.net as a start.

Good luck!
are u just going after computer programming, or computers themselves like hardware support technicians, IT persons, network administrators, help anaylsts etc.......

?
Helpdesk jobs are the traditional stepping stone in the IT industry.
Well i know a few certifcations but they will be diffrent from an IT. But its in the computer industry for sure. It is very cheap to. 400 study material including test. something like that. What I am getting at becoming a computer technician that is certified. The course you would first take is compTIA a++ and after about 2 year experience you can advance onto server, linux, security. etc http://www.comptia.org/home.aspx
thank you so much for information, will look into it
A certification is a good option to learn skills to for a specific task in IT. For example, you can go for certain programming certifications. But with such certifications you may be prepared for a specific role. However, from a long term perspective, a degree is what will help you. A Bachelor of Computer Science degree is what you can look at. The degree covers a wide range of courses that are applied in the real world. Attending a degree course will not only help you acquire varied computer skills/knowledge, but will also give you a business perspective which will prove valuable in the long run.

Remember, a certification can help you get your foot in the door but for career advancement a college degree is the way to go.
