I was wondering what people's thoughts are on Blu-ray and HD quality films and TV?

I'm so far stubbornly sticking to TV and films without these extra quality adds, but I'm curious to know if once you're engrossed in a movie or intense drama if you really notice the difference between no frills and HD?

I can believe that if you have 2 TVs next to each other, one with and one without, that the picture quality will be sharper etc. on the one with, but is it really time to upgrade and render the old, non Blu-ray DVDs useless and pay more for High Definition TV?

I'd be delighted to understand more about this and hear some opinions, Thanks!

These days, I very much prefer HD content. In fact, anything that is SD is starting to feel cheap. A HDTV, along with HD content for me is the standard these days, but don't expect to see great results with SD content on an HDTV - It'll look awful, even worse than SD content on SD TVs.

However, as far as HD is concerned, on my TV, I find no difference between 720p and 1080p HD quality. Both are extremely crisp, have great colours and are very scalable. However, if you want to go beyond 47 inches, 720p won't be enough.

I've had an HDTV since 2008, and have loved HD ever since. I initially bought it for the larger size - wasn't even thinking about HD back then, but I've grown to love HD content since then.

As far as blu-ray is concerned, DVDs (at least the good quality ones) are enough for me, for now. Blu-ray is still rather more expensive and probably won't last as the streaming (downloading) age is... actually, sort of here, already. I don't mind blu-ray, but enough's enough. Why would I need to pay for the same films again to enjoy them in ~twice the resolution?
Thank you so much for your post- I've found it extremely helpful and I'll definitely consider the HD option now!

I'm with you on the Blu-ray I think. It seems mad to have to re-purchase films I already own just to get that little bit extra resolution. Had to go through that when VHS went to DVDs originally and seems a bit much to have to do it again.

I'm thinking that surely they will just build Blu-ray into standard DVDS in future, or maybe (although I hope not) they'll force Blu-ray to become the only option for home viewing unless, as you rightly point out, the downloading of films turns into the normal way to buy a film!

It is amazing how technology advances- thank you for the steer as I struggle to keep up sometimes!
