More Information

Does anyone know the make of computers used in the movie Hackers. When they first move to New York and he is hacking the TV station, the computer he is using almost looks like a laptop. Friends and I have been having this debate for quite some time now and none of us can come up with the answer. Does any one else know the answer.

Thank you all

Harry

powerbook 280 and a 5300CS
Haha, I saw this as I was watching that very same movie. Your question sparked my interest, so I looked on the web with no luck. Yes it does look like a laptop, but it looks pretty old for when the movie came out and when it was supposed to take place. It looks more to what we used call to "portable" computers. The scene that you're talking about, Dane is clearly not using a PowerBook (no scroll ball on the keyboard). What is weird is that it's a color LCD with the keyboard folding into the screen like laptops from the mid to late 80's. Zenith was one of the first (if not the first) to design a laptop/notebook as we know it today. The ZFL-181-93 was offered in 1987, 9 years before the movie was released. I found a site that lists a lot of computers from the 70's thru 1995 and I found a few that looked similar. Here is the web site, http://www.old-computers.com/museum

You have a very good question.
Looks like a mix of Apples and PC's.

The Lunchbox Dade uses looks like it could be a Compaq because of the trackball on the side of the monitor but could just be a movie prop. Color lunchpails from back then could be Dolch's but they did not have that trackball on the side of the monitor.

The kid that hacked the 'Gibson' used an Apple 3.5" hard drive so it could have been a IIGS based on the gear being carted out of his apartment.

Burn had a Newton 2000 on her desk in one scene.

The laptop Crash gets from the Plauge is cool. Apple made clear samples of some powerbooks which are ultra rare.

Anyone else playing.

Update

at 1:08:59 Crash is using Burns PowerBook Duo which appears to be painted black along with the black floppy drive.

To the left is the Newton.

Laptop that Crash gets from the Plauge is a PowerBook Duo with clear cases.

In the scene where cereal goes global if you look on the desk in the background you will see a Duo Dock with a Radius Pivot monitor on top set to landscape mode.

Thanks for all the replies, a lot of information that I missed and will look out for next time watching the movie, like the Newton. You are most probably correct about the computer Crash uses being a movie prop. I have looked all over the net to find out what model it was. I am only curious because it looks similar to a computer used in War Games and I just thought that the design looked unique. Very boxy, I could never decide if it was a laptop or desktop. When they play the game to Hack Gill's (FBI Agent) life, Crash uses the computer he used in his room when hacking the TV Network, outside at a phone booth.

I must say that out of all the units used in the movie, the unit I thought would be a movie prop was the clear laptop sent to Crash from Le Plauge. Really awesome to discover that unit actually existed, a clear laptop, too cool for words.

Thanks everyone for the replies

Well for those that are interested I thin Ihave found the computer used. Now I have watched the movie over and over, pausing to see if I could see any clues. The Computer Crash uses when the movie starts, He and his mother are setting up apartment in New York and Crash does his first Hack after turning 18. This is the computer I wanted to know about and what stated this topic off.

However when Crash takes up the challenge to destroy Gill the FBI agent and they are out and about hooking up to Phone Booths the computer is slightly different. I always thought they where the same computer but it would appear not. When Crash is in the apartment at the begining of the movie there is no track ball at the side of the monitor. When they are at the phone both there is a track ball to the right of the monitor as you look at it.

So I think Ihave found the first computer, the one in the apartment and Issac Newton is correct it is a Compaq. Here is the link

I am still working to try and find the other model, so here is to another few months trawling the net to find it lol.

Talk to you all later guys

Harry
It's an old 75mhz NEC all in one from around mid '94, even had a color screen.
BAM! Joined up just to post this.

Think this was it?
