Custom Linux Based Computer Router VS Linksys, Netgear Style Routers
I use an old Compaq Deskpro powered with IPCop as my main firewall and router for my home and home office. I have configured this system to provide my home with three closed and secured wired and wireless networks, proxy server which direct traffic to various web servers running in my home, MySQL server, and email server.
I have been quite pleased with this system and recently wrote a post about it on my blog. But that got me to thinking that I might be in a minority. How many people would prefer to build and maintain a custom Linux-based computer firewall and router vs simply buying a typically everyday one from BestBuy such as a Netgear or Linksys.
What do you think is better: Linux based computer router or a regular Linksys / Netgear Router?

Depending on your needs, many people really don't "need" a super blazing fast computer. Unfortunately, I think software developers have gotten very lazy with their work simply because they no longer have a black cloud over their head concerning lack of hardware resources. Look at Atari games for example... those guys were amazing. How could they pack so much "GAME" into a 2k to 4k cartridge and properly code it to be operated at 1.19MHz with only 128bytes of memory? Yet hundreds did... Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Dig Dug, etc.. Those were amazing times... there's really nothing too thrilling about today's lazy technology.

A computer running something like iPCop is way more powerful and safe compared to a router, some routers have built-in firewalls, but they are too weak, a Router is just a good option on this case when talking about wireless network, but wired, won't change much, but if you get one router, get a Linksys or Cisco Router (even tho they are almost the same thing).

Agreed... and never ever get Belkin. That's the worst brand ever. It shouldn't even be considered a brand.

Never used a Belkin router, i had bad experiences with cheap brands like D-Link ( i think it doesn't exist in USA, anyway), but Linksys/Cisco is always good.

D-Link is very popular here. Especially in places like BestBuy and Walmart. It's a step up from Belkin in my opinion.

I think you can strike a happy medium and get a dd-wrt compatible router, at least thats what I did, works wonders for what I need.
