More Information

Hey there forum,

I've some questions about web design, I want to create a website where people can:

*Post their scripts and ask for help
*Post their scripts
*Get thumbs up/down if the script is good/bad
*Edit their script and send a notification to the people who viewed the thread

Scripting the site is not a problem for me. I want to script it in:
*ASP. Net or PHP
*Css 3 (for the design)

I'm kind of worried about the design because I'm not that creative, and I don't want to pay/use a template.

I would love it if someone helped me out with designing it or send me some tutorials.

Thank you for taking time to read and answer my questions. I look forward to your responses,

Devian Groenwoud

Tip start from a template you like and redesign it if you don't know much about design.
If you want to start from a picture, use fireworks to design your site (you can slice it overthere)

Keep in mind: 'Being creative is something different then programming...'
Simplicity is key.

Fonts you should use: Georgia, Helvetica Neue.

Colours you should use: White (or Light Grey) (background) and Black (or Dark Grey/Dark Blue/Dark Red).

Software you should use: Adobe Fireworks OR Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Dreamweaver (or similar)
Thank you sir, I will try to made a design in photoshop.. I use Visual Studio to script it though is that bad or good?
Something worth noting. You should keep the fonts to a small list of "web safe" ones, unless you plan on employing one of the many font replacement systems like @font-face or sIFR. Be sure you own the licensing rights to do so though if you take that route!

If using san serif fonts, maybe start with Helvetica, Arial, "sans serif" in the font stack. People on Macs and Linux (and Windows with it installed) will get Helvetica, then it'll use Arial as a back up if it can't be found, then some other sans serif font on their system. For some reason Microsoft were too cheap to licence Helvetica and had Arial created with the same spacings and so on as a cheap imitation, but that's another story lol.
A great web design tutorial: www.w3schools.com
Heres a few tips that i have used in my 3 years as a Web Developer.

Before i even think about doing ANY work in Dreamweaver, Photoshop, etc. I always get a pen and paper, and write down what i want to do. For example, i would do a rough sketch of the type of layout i want, and label where everything will go, what color something will be, etc.

Then i would start doing the design work. Remember to keep things simple, don't use any weird font's or colors. Keep the information in your website organised, oh, and make sure it is easy for users to navigate from page to page.

Also, here are a few website that may be able to help you better:

http://w3schools.com has some very good lessons on almost every type of script out there.

http://tutorialized.com has some very good tutorials on how to do scripts, graphics, etc.

http://phpfreaks.com is a community where you can get quick help, if you run into any problems when scripting your website or designing. They have people who have lots of experience in many types of scripting languages.

I hope this helps you some. I wish you well with your project!
