Being a geek can get expensive. Do you work and save up? Or Do you make what technologies you have work for you. What do you do to pay for the things you want?

to keep costs low i don't do frequent builds......its also best not to be an early adaptor of the latest board or processor as you're paying extra for that.....also doing things yourself helps reduce the costs of building rigs

anyways it just takes the above and some common sense when it comes to building things
I just work to save up for whatever I desire. Working on minimum wage and saving up for the geek toys takes a while.
I tend to use ebay and local computer fairs where I pick up old junk for next to nothing prices. I then look at what I've just bought, see what I can salvage and renovate and then build up fully operational machines from the parts. The rest of the systems get thrown under my desk in a "spare parts" box for future use.

In this way I have built up quite a large collection of operational PCs and laptops plus a very large spare parts collection of old motherboards, cases, monitors hdd's etc.

Plus, just today I have found a second-hand shop in town where there are a large collection of PC's and the shopkeeper has no idea what he is sitting on!! time for some haggling :-)
One of the best way to pay for toys - is to get 'your job to pay for them'.
Being in Engineering has it's benefits in that - If I see a new toy that has potential
to be in the 'need to know' catagory - I get the company to buy for me.

Engineering is fun !
it's usually only expensive for the compulsive types of geeks who can't stop buying and buying.
In my case instead of buying a 2500$ Core i7-750 Quad Imac 27 inch with only 4GB DDR3 ram and a radeon 4850, i wanted a Core i7 920 with 12GB DDR3 and Black edition overclocked 5870, with a nice aluminnum case etc .............but that alone was also expensive, so your right we gotta fund our habits, i just saved up alot of money for it since i was 14 lol, my exact same tower is probly worth a bit less now but oh well. Other then that i'd say my technology is cheaper, i got a nice 40 Inch 1080P LCD, bout 30K Contrast but it's 1080P, has a regular DVD Player that can up convert to 1080P with HDMi so, that and my PS3..........tech here has been cheap since the few major purchases. How did i make the money for it all? well i worked and saved.
i do freelance computer repair
I guess i just earn enough and also claim expenses for items like the Ipad

Being a good geek, brings you up the payement ranking, I assure you! Geeks (certainly userfriendly geeks) are wanted, dead or alive in many companies.
And if you buy or wanna buy (if you can or not, doesn't matter) every new tech product that comes out, you're not a geek for me, but a snob.
Like I don't wanna buy an iphone, it gives you the thoughts it's a very open system, but irl it's a closed system protected by mac. Android is the future (or mac has to change his mentality), It only exists a couple of years and allready selling more then iphones.
Open is the future, so close the closed and protected past. Be small and think big, think like google

This is where purchasing what you need really applies. Do your homework and understand the products.
First I browse and find what I want for the cheapest/lowest price. No I'm no cheapo but I hate buying something and finding it a day later for less $$$$.
But anyways I kinda save up or when I don't want to pull money out of pocket I put stuff on ebay ( I buy stuff just cuz I like it, want it and even if I don't need it ) and it feels like I didn't spend a cent on it.
