I was curious about GIFs. googled it. came up with a bunch of stuff but one jumped out, gimp. Seems it is associated with free programs. It looks like Bill wouldn't like these and I was wondering if Bill would spank my computor if I downloaded gimp.

I have always had sucess with gimp on MS platforms. I haven't yet tried it on Vista or 7, but I remember it working perfectly well on XP with modest hardware. Best of luck!
I haven't used it on Windows 7 yet but when I did on XP it did a good job. There is nothing like free.

Give it a try. No harm in trying it out. Oh and there are a lot of extras with that program but you have to download them afterward.
haha, oh ya he'd spank ur comp haha
i perfer gimp sumtimes
Bill is not against free. Though he is the son of a banker so he really appreciates the dollar. He's against illegal sharing. If the producers of the program want to give it out free he's totally for that.

And the GIMP works fine on Windows 7 and Vista. I've used them both with the GIMP. Heck I'm currently using an older version of the GIMP so I can use the GIMP-Painter edition.
Gimp is the Linux answer to Photoshop. It carries most of the features. It is ported over to windows as "freeware". I put quotes around it because on Linux, "Freeware" is known as "a program".

Anyways, it's a great image editor, I use it all the time on Ubuntu.
You only have to worry about getting spanked like that on the Apple platform. If Apple does not like something to be free, they will prevent their users from obtaining the free software so that they can come back and charge for it later. Tethering for example, or any of the Cydia apps for that matter.

Microsoft will just change their methods of making money... Not punish the users for finding a better way or evolving.
Bill doesn't like any of his gimps to have their own Gimp. But yeah it runs in Windoz just fine. Better question is why you want Gimp for GIF editing. GIF is actually a proprietary format that is *not* supported by a lot of free software due to patent complications. If you're looking to do indexed-color images for the web, you probably want PNG-8, which is near-universally supported.

If you are looking to do pixel art / animation, GIF is a pretty decent format for showing off your work, but there's a great piece of software called GraphicsGale that is much better oriented for doing that kind of artwork (it can also export animations to a non-proprietary AVI format which runs in most video players if you use the Pro version - cheap at $25 last I checked).

There's no other decent reason to use GIF that I can think of.
Why a GIF? Because one of the places on the internets I went to suggested one could animate the picture of you, I am looking at right now Justen, using a GIF. I just thought that would be cool. BTW thanks for all the input, I am not a geek and don't even know if it is cool to be asking questions, cuz I sure have alot and assume each should have its own subject. Greg out.
I've been using Gimp for a little while on my Windows Machine. After downloading it for my Mac, though, I noticed a couple of annoying problems. The graphics are just slightly glitched, though not enough to matter, and you have to click on a window to select it before you can do anything in that window.

CLICK: Select Tools Window
CLICK: Select Tool
CLICK: Select Layers Window

This gets VERY annoying when making an image. Anyone know of a free program that works better on Macs?
