More Information

Although I am not completely restricted by price (laptop will be used for garden design work using software) I do not know if Windows 7 is reliable and wondering if I can stick with XP for less money if I buy a laptop on Amazon or elsewhere..

Anything that does the job really, without paying out more than I have to.

Software system requirements:

Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7
512 MB RAM
3 GB available hard drive space
DirectX 9.0c (included)
Direct 9-compatible video card with 128 MB video RAM

Any advice is much appreciated - Thanks.

Thanks guys - all your answers have been really great! It now seems an established fact that Windows 7 is a success story - as yet I have not heard people say bad things about it (unlike Windows Vista).
However, since I asked this question the possibilities of what Google has in store for internet users with Chrome OS and uploading files directly to their servers instead of the Hard drive have made me consider using Linux and finding online storage for all my files (including running applications [which takes me to my next question...]

(PS thanks Chris (or whoever was responsible) for featuring this question)

I would go with Win 7. So far it has been super stable for me. I am running it on both an Asus laptop and a Dell Mini 9. I am also running it on my work workstation and administer a 2003 environment without a hitch.
Windows 7 is really got great reviews i would have it installed on my pc but well i have the RC and money is a little tight but i will be getting win7 as soon as the RC stops working
If you are looking for a PC with 512mb of RAM, i would stick with XP....you can probably get a computer like that quite easily from ebay

I believe the minimum RAM for Windows 7 is 1GB
^ Completely Agree ^
Windows 7 has been great for me, HOWEVER! i have had just a few compatibility issues pertaining to software. I'd check microsoft.com to see if your software is compatible.
I would go Win. 7, I have very good luck w/ it so far.

Win7 FTW.
it all depends on how much ram you plan to have installed.......if its not much go with xp.....otherwise win 7 pro or above is a good alternative
Get a New laptop They are pretty cheap
something with a Dual core at least, speed shouldn't be an issue with what you want to do with it....IE 1.8GHZ+ Dual, you will likely get 2GHZ+, 2GBS DDR2, for vista or 7, 1GB DDR2 for XP...512 dont cut it anymore ey. DDR3 is an option to if ya find, it is better. Most chipsets/graphics our at least DX10.

When you look at how cheap laptops are now, just buy a new one.
Your requirements are so minimal I would get a used Laptop on E-Bay.
I'd say Windows 7 because from my experience it has been very stable and any new software that comes out will be made for it, also it runs quite nicely on lower end hardware. The end question is through do you want an older operating system that you are comfortable with or a newer one that is different, but will have newer software available to it.
Windows 7 has an Xp mode... I have not actually used it and I don't know how it will work on netbooks. Windows 7 IS very stable by itself, and I would recommend it as it is.
