How well do you teach your family and friends with technology?

I was helping my mum use her new iPhone tonight and she went to me 'Paul you know what? Your very patient when you teach somebody something new.' Now that got me thinking, I've never really thought about how well I teach someone. Usually I will just go with the flow and get on with it. I do find it rewarding when I teach somebody something new.

What about you my follow comrades?

Yeah, I know how this tune goes!

Problem - computer says no.
Solution - YOU!

I've been in this situation for about 10 years. To cope, I avoid meeting new people, I always confuse the hell out of anyone who asks (as far as they're concerned anyways) and a lot of the time, people get bored of what I'm saying while I'm in mid-sentence. It's really quite interesting. A few years ago, can't remember exactly when, I noticed that friends and family had what's called a 'glaze reflex'. The vast majority of technology cannot be explained in non technological terms. It's like trying to get the cat and the dog started in conversation. Not going to happen.

My own solution has been to classify all technological items with 4 attributes. All tech related things have a shape, a colour, an approxomated size and a number. For some networking cable then we could say that it's a wire, yellow (even though networking cable comes in any colour you like), about 4 feet long, 9 copper 'teeth' on each end. I've yet to find any jargon that doesn't have at least some of these attributes.
My mom asks me for help all the time. I don't mind teaching her but she doesn't seem to retain anything at all. I have to show her how to do the same thing over and over again.
I can, so I do. If you can't, then teach.
I like teaching people new things but about 99 percent of the time my parents, or any other person for that matter, takes it for granted...not my favorite!
If you like to teach, would you teach for a living?
uuuummm idk i havnt really thought about it much...
I could get paid ALOT more to putting the skills i have to work in a job like programming than teahing them to others for a living.
Perhaps. Most of my lecturer's came from really professional jobs, then they come to Uni?? Maybe the money is better, or they probably want to ' Spend less' time of work..who knows.

I'm at the cross roads were I still don't know what I will be doing in two years after I graduated :S:S
well...pick a category.
I myself am applying for a job at Pixar.
It all depends on what kind of job you want. Do you want to sit at a desk and have a job that is very writing intensive? or do you want a job that requires you to get up and be walking around all day?
I am patient i think i guess i am but i get the whole its your fault when things go wrong all of the time. but the worst part is with how i fix things is the fact that i presume that what they have been doing before the computer broke is correct because you know what it is not correct most of the time they have been there and messed it up from day one always think as the non-technologically minded people as stupid stupid stupid stupid. god i wish people knew how stupid they were in some situations.

one other thing about me is the fact that i hate asking for any money what so ever hate it it really bugs me when i am asked to ask for some money etc really annoying to me i don't know why? i also never have any money i can figure that one out for my self though.
i like to think im a good teacher, i taught some freinds of mine who were windows users and fairly average ones, one now runs a linux web server from his house and the other is a better windows user who has tried linux (although he found it wasnt really for him).

But i like to think that i teach people to try new things...
I will teach anyone that is willing to learn. I have been my families and extended families tech support/guru for years and it does not bother me!!!
I teach people all the time and I find it rewarding. The other day I taught someone how to connect their camera to their computer via usb port. Also, I showed them how to use the software that came with it. They thanked me and I was glad to help. Their life is a tiny bit easier because of me. =)
