I installed Windows 7 Ultimate today but when I try to type the @ character I get this character " . Windows says that when I try to type the character "@" This task will be created with administrative privileges and when I try to type " in a notepad or here on the forum the reverse happens. In fact the reverse happens all the time anywhere. What should I do?

im confused hitting the key marked @ results in a " appearing, correct? and also at the same time you get a windows message that says your starting a task? and that task needs and/or will be run with administrative privileges. and in certain applications this process is reversed?

clean install or upgrade?

how old is your rig?
Ummm, wow, this is strange indeed. Are ye sure it is a problem w/ ye copy of Win. 7?

Do a Windows Update and reboot.
Hey P C you are right. When I access the run window it says "This task will be created with administrative privileges" so it's basically in reverse so when I have to access either of those keys I have to do the opposite. I am afraid to use windows update because last time it screwed up my PC. In fact it screws it up all the time. Is there a way to access administrator privileges? And maybe change things?
Well the reasoning is kind of maybe simple you screwed up the installation in the keyboard configuration when the @ and the " keys are swapped around this means you have chosen a different format to your keyboard then normal like american and british have these differences in keys.
Why would it make a difference if your keyboard country settings are not what they are supposed to be? Why would it cause an issue? That's weird lol. I am in Jamaica so should I change it to Jamaica?
you should change the settings to the way that your keyboard is set out in example my @ key is on the right hand side above the ' on the same key and me " on the left above my 2 this is british configuration i believe and is set up the same way within the software configuration of windows.

The whole launching of an application is well interesting at best have you launched this application to see what it is? with the whole require of admin privileges this is just the windows account control item very annoying mostly turned off for users who do things to there system on a regular basis and i am not sure what that problem is without telling you that some one has hotkeyed the @ symbol to some app.
Thanks Nathan, I will try what you just suggested. By the way, does anyone know what time Zone Florida is in, whether eastern or pacific or what time zone Jamaica is. That will help me to reset my time zone and keyboard settings. But I don't know. Thanks in advance.
Sorry guys. I changed the location and the problem still persists. What should I do?
You need to change the keyboard layout. I don't know about 7, but in XP, it's:
Start > Control Panel > Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options > Regional and Language Options. Then go to the "Language" tab, go to details, and click add.
This is assuming the problem is that the British QWERTY keyboard is the one installed, most people (including most of the British people I know) use the American QWERTY keyboard. I personally would recommend the switch to Dvorak, but I'm odd. :P
iv the same prob sept with windows xp
New Keyboard!
I don't spend too much time troubleshooting the small stuff.
