Geek Out!

More Information

I registered my domain (projectn00b.org), but one problem.  Where is it going to to forward to?  My first instinct was to use Yola/Moonfruit but this option quickly went out the window because firstly, all they give me is a templates to work from and none of these templates has my intial design that I dreamt about.  Secondly, their is going to be a forum section.  No way is my website going to have a tab forwarding itself to freeforums.org.  And thirdly, it lacks flexibilty.  It is just not practicle for what the website is going to be.

So I got another idea, find some hosting service.  So I went round the internet looking for free hosting.  Nope, all I got found this site called 'DriveHQ',  It is no way practicle at all.  I don't even think it is made for hosting a site and what concerned me even more was security.

So my last option is to start a server myself,  just because it would be more safe and more practicle to what the site is.  I have already prepared the HTML/PHP files for my site, but I'm just not sure about dishing out money for a server.  Because... I don't actually have experience with hosting. So I need some tips, should I actually get a server, or do you know any hosting services?  Should I use Linux server (which I don't know how to use) or Windows?  Should I consider getting a different ISP?  I'm trying to keep this as cheap as possible, in fact I'm thinking of using cheap desktops from eBay.

if you have a crap computer laying around, just use that and run the server from your house. Unless you have a huge following, there is no real reason to start out thinking big. over time you can move the site, but right now you are probably better off hosting it yourself. If you wanted to try linux, most of them are free, and semi easy to install. my only experience is with Fedora 14, its very Mac looking, and not to difficult to use. With linux you can define just about any aspect of the computer, including the security, which sounds like one of your concerns. im sure there is some post on Geeks regarding server hosting from home, or use the Googles.

really all it takes is a computer, internet connection, and Apache. good luck!

Well, it usually takes more than apache. Not to mention, running a server from home takes a hell of a lot of work and requries you to have extraordinary patience.

What he needs is a quick and cheap web hosting service, something akin to hostgator.com, godaddy.com or mediatemple.net (the last of which is a tad bit expensive, but it is one of the best services around).

There is absolutely no point in running a server from home, unless you have a really fast internet connection with open ports and a static IP and a spare and fast PC readily available.

Not to spam myself and won't include a link but I can offer you basic hosting for $3.95/mo and Unlimited features (email, domains hosted, databases) and start you with 750megs of disk space and 800megs of bandwidth.

Also we give cPanel w/Fantastico (1-Click forum, blog, etc install). I won't provide any info about my company as I don't want to be a spammer, so you must use freewill. Plus we offer a slide-scale rate and plans. Ok bye.

That's a bad deal. Really, really bad.

800MB of bandwidth is TINY. And so is 750MB of space.

$3.95/a month would be sufficient for no less than 50GB of bandwidth and 5GB of space.
