Most High speed 3ghz Dual-cores From Pentium D, Athlon 64 X2 are still very optimal for gaming, while some other more powerful dual-cores will handle any game out their currently at the highest settings, might i give you a preview of which one's are the best.

These are some of the best Gaming Dual-Cores, and i can gurantee full blown play with them, trust me.
Core 2 Duo E8400 (E8000 Series) While obsolete to the core i3/5 they still hold power needed in the most demanding PC Games, and are good overclockers.

AMD Phenom II Black edition 500 series dual-cores, Serious overclockers, You may even get lucky and unlock an additional 2 cores (Not guranteed) They got everything the most hardcore gamer would need Minimally.

Core i3/i5the next Generation of powerful Dual-core processors, that feature Hyper threading and L3 Cache, though the overall performance ratio in gaming is not much of an increase then the E8000 Series of core 2 duo's, they are actually cheaper, Keep in mind the 540 will cost you 30$ more then the 530 for a 3.06ghz clock instead of 2.9)

As for quad's i'm not sure those cheap Athlon II X4's were built for gaming, they also have lowere cache then all of the dual-core's i have shown you. I Don't gurantee it to push ur gaming all the way.
If your serious about going quad, might i suggest the Phenom II X4 or Core i5/i7
i have a amd am2 motherboard.
and i cant afford a motherboard.
And i play gta 4 so i cant really go HT
motherboard info?
What's the brand and name of your motherboard
Go here if you don't know and run a Hardware scan for the motherboard information.

More then happy to. http://www.d-a-l.com/hardwarescan/
for what their asking in price for the E8400 and stuff on the core 2 duo's i'd say it's better to get a core i3 as they are either the same price or cheaper, 180$ Should get you the core i3 540, while a 130-150$ should get you the core i3 530. Which the overall performance, especially for gaming isn't MUCH different but it would be a more worthwhile upgrade, especially since it uses a newer Socket 1156 Motherboard versus the aging obsolete Socket 775, which is still alright actually, especially if you have some of the DDR3 Socket 755 Models. Not to mention the Socket 1156's Mobo's may have advanced features and what not. Believe me Dan is drooling all over the Socket 1156's core i3 Line but it would seem that his current setup is still very much Capable of his current doings.
i know but gta 4 maxed req is a quad core and i have only seen it run smooth on a quad :/.
I think the only reason the max requirements is because of the load leveling. Basically the more cores you have the more you can offload to each one. So if you have four cores, 2 can be used on the game while the other 2 handle the regular windows services and the like. A quad core shouldn't have any direct effect on game performance, however the extra cores will help with the load of the system overall.
yeah you are right.
But i rhink i will go quad anyways coz i want my gaming kit ot last asap.
Thanks!
ANOTHER TIP: Don't worry so much in reguard to a quad core processor, Try this for a Big Time improvement. Upgrade your old LCD 5ms monitor to a 2ms montior. You be WOWED by your gaming AVG. improvement.
Lol!
I have used to have a 29 ms monitor :D.
Now i have a 3 ms monitor.
yeah i think ur right.
have noticed a improvement
no game requires a quad to be maxed. Most games Max Out on Dual-Cores of at the most 3ghz, Especially if their processors known to give the GPU a good helping push.
GET AS MANNY CORES WORKING 4 U AS U CAN!!!
