More Information

Okay, so I customized an HP Pavilion Elite HPE-300z series computer that
I think will do pretty well with gaming (I know - building my own computer is cheaper and better). The games I want to play are
games like GTA IV, Bad Company 2, Dirt 2, etc. I'd like to play them on
as high quality as possible with as good FPS as possible but I only have
a budget of $1000 USD.

These are the specs of my customized PC:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
AMD Phenom II X4 965 quad-core processor [3.4GHz, 2MB L2 + 6MB L3 shared,
up to 4000MHz]
6GB DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM
750GB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s
1GB ATI Radeon HD 5770
600W

How do you think this rig will do with what I want?

If I overclock my CPU to 3.8 GHz and overclock the GPU to 950 MHz and the memory clock to about 1435 MHz, what type of upgrades would I need to do? I know I'd need a PSU (550W-600W?), more fans (I figured I could install them into the computer case), anything else?

All help is GREATLY appreciated!

this one is different because it only has 4gbs of ram , and psu
shopping.hp.com has a six-core amd going for about 900 somethin, thing its a 5450 or a 5570, anywhere from 4-8gb ddr3 i cant remember, likely 6 or 8. but anyway, yes ur all set lol.

i question the psu powering that card and the system all together
Yeah, the I don't see how the PSU could possibly power the computer unless HP upgrades it without giving the buy a choice because the specs for the HPE-300z say that it comes with a 300W PSU.
Yes, but it would get better is you bought an i7 and a 600w psu.
well av. i'm like you, i have an i7. However i've watched a phone II 940 and 965, at the same speed, with SAME GRAPHICS cards, same game same settings, exact same performance.

course now amd chips r supposed to be better with graphics when using ati cards.

Beh W/e Intel core i7 920 from 2009, D0 Stepping!
and i like it, what you got?
You'll be fine with that set up. I'd DEFINITELY get a better PSU though, 300W will seriously have problems supplying the needed power for that set up when doing anything remotely demanding. Beyond that you should be fine with the games you mentioned. My Windows box has pretty similar specs (although I have a Core 2 Quad Q9550 at 2.8GHz which isn't quite as beefy as the AMD you listed) and it runs all those nicely. The GPU performance will depend on the size of your monitor too. The bigger resolution it is the more power it'll need, but that thing should do well at 1680 x 1050. It'll start showing signs (very minimal depending on what's happening on screen) at 1920 x 1200. You may have to drop the settings down a little too at that res.

Also, you may want to consider investing in an SSD for your OS install and games, then use the regular larger drive for all your files. You'd be surprised how much of a performance boost an SSD gives over regular drives. Think of that in the future though when you have the budget and when you've managed to see just how the machine performs, you may see no reason to improve it, so you can save some cash.
i seen a Q9659 for 199$
3.4ghz Core 2 quaddy OOOOOOOOOOOOH So extreme ;)

Q9550 is fast tho yes yes, my i7 in gaming was matched against a core 2 duo E8400, but i got better frame rates outta my gpu lol
running that system with that psu is like pulling a train with a golf cart, fix that and it will play anything
the phenom I 965 is anywhere from 90-125Watt chip i believe + everything else, is not toalling 300 watts. But with the 5770.......well the 5770 will never use 300 Watts, NEVER USE MORE THEN 300 watts.
but if it ever needed to use 300 watts ur screwed, cus i thinkt he 5770 required a 450 Watt PSU
but uh, i bet u paid a good deal for the rig, it came with the cpu and the 6gb ddr3, and likely a 5450 or 5570 =/ and u upgraded to the 5770 which HP has available through their store for some models ;o

while they did that on a 5770 is bs, i DO no that if your not doing any gaming, or any graphically intensive stuff, the card will receive enough power (because it's useage will be like 100-150 watts.
like if ur just multi tasking around, browing the internet, watching or streaming HD, if that 300-watt got a pci express 2.0 x16, which im sure it does, it will power the 5770, but u'll never get good performance out of it unless it has access to the 300 watts draw it requires.

not even the 5970 uses more then 300 watt's, making as 5870 in crossfire, a smidge 5-10% faster then the single dual-gpu. Course once u overclock the 5970, u rape both the 5870's in crossfire by that 5-10% maybe higher, but u go over the 300-watt

xD so, u can play around and see how well ur system performes, but your power supply can go out with a bang or just not turn on again/from randomly shutting off. Hence it's dead. If it keeps turning on and off, then their's not enough power, the 5770 be gone!

course psu's r cheap man, hit up newegg and find a 500-watt psu for urself
Thanks for the reply. I found out that HP makes you either buy your own PSU and install it yourself or they can put in a PSU that you want. I figured I'd put in a 600W.
what did u pay for the tower, probably erm 6-700$
? but you probly paid more for hp to add a 5770.

You only need 500-Watts
All games on highest possible quality? Um...Ok Well
1680x1050 I think, anything under, guranteed.
Well the total price is $990. Tower I didn't get to choose. All I got to choose was the CPU, GPU, RAM, HDD, OS, and some other stuff. My monitor has a resolution of 1366x768. You sure 500W will be safe?
