More Information

Well this is a new thing that im sure most of you can relate too and its relatives friends of parents etc there was basically hello how are you can you help with this thing on the computer its starting to happen i am becoming the family and friends computer fixer and to be honest i don't really like it that much frankly its annoying im in playing games and then people start to ask about problems even on the bus journey home im starting to get a little worried personally as my life might be consumed during "my time" by requests to fix things or help things.

So who else is the local family and friends fix a computer for free service?

EDIT:

So what is the overall solution here? i do think its nice that i am called upon at a time of need and when you get something working they are happy and what have you and that makes me happy.

But there is the ugly part when say things go more to the side of you need to buy this to fix this sort of deal they never seem happy.

And as mentioned in the comments there is the dreaded it never did this until you did this thing now fix what you did blah blah blah.
I remember one time i was around my families house and they asked me to put this DS on the wifi and then somehow there internet did not work an hour or so later and they said i was to blame because i added a DS to there network which they asked me to do.
needless to say they have never asked for anything ever again but also then again they have not called or seen them since but they are like that moody after something that was not even the other persons fault.

It can get annoying. Some random person asked me to jailbreak their iPhone today.
Most of these requests can be solved with a simple Google search.
I guess I kind of am, but not so much that it becomes really annoying. My dad knows enough about computers for him to not run into too many problems, although I have had to help him once or twice. My mom doesn't use computers enough (at least not at home) to really run into any problems either. I sometimes have to help my sister with stuff, but not so often that its a big problem, and its usually just small little stuff that takes 5 minutes.
I normally get my bridges in a bunch whenever this topic comes up. It's been the story of my life. The free family tech.
Eventually they just got the hint. They don't ask anymore. Unless it's my closest (daughter/hubby/son) I just don't do any type of service for my family members. It got to the point, I had 3 members a week or pc's just brought/dropped off at my house. I never charged but at least make an offer. Then when it went bad again. oh, remember the pc u fixed I'm having problems again. I must of done this or that.
All I sudden I fixed it once and I'm responsible for it. I don't fix any ones PC' but my own. My time isn't free.
lol i'm also cursed as the family computer guy

luckily i don't get many requests as i live like a hermit, but occasionally i'll have the neighbors ask me for a favor , and they usually pay if i do have to diagnose and fix things

its only annoying when you're in the middle of something heh
I am my family's technology fixer >_>. It can be annoying, especially since usually the stuff they need help on is done by pressing a button, or hooking up a DVD player; those annoy me the most.
This has been nearly all my life (my family aren't great with technology) be it from the television to the computer and the sat nav in the car. I guess I now do it a lot with my own blog and Youtube videos but it can still get slightly annoying. A bit of me time maybe.

Especially frustrating when I know what to do to fix their problem before they even describe the whole problem....
Hm maybe a collection of geeks should make videos on the "simple" things that trouble people and then have a youtube channel etc. just a though that if there are multiple people that work on it all those small little videos won't seem so tedious when it comes down to it.
good idea, problem is the majoirity of people with issues do not even know about youtube, or even know how to use a browser
lol ok you get a problem request and have alll the fixes on a memory stick and they are categorized and they can select there problem this should obviously be compatible with both win mac and other hardware incase of the possibility of computers being completely broken in certain ways like ram not seated properly.

hmm interesting thoughts maybe it could actually happen
i think a flow chart would be even easier

lol its just an example :p
Lol yes reaper your example does work but say for example the hard drive died i don't think people will be able to first diagnose this is the problem and second have a spare lying around as you do everyday objects such as lightbulbs etc what you gonna do if disk controller is broken go and buy a replacement and fit too hard drive i don't see that happening any time soon.
