More Information

I only have a little bit of knowledge about how Wordpress works, and the install was handled by a script that my web host provided.  I was trying to move the folder that the blog showed up in, and it went fine except that I did it in a way that gave me a redirect.  I should have just stopped right there but I had a lot of duplicate files.  I installed Wordpress into the folder that I wanted, with the duplicate files, and I was then not able to log in

Actually it isn't important how I screwed it up.  Long story short, I backed up the folder it was installed in by copying in on the server, I backed up, via rsync, everything on my home folder (and upwards) which is a directory below what is visible on the web, so any settings there I have on my computer here at home and is ready to be uploaded.
I then uninstalled all Wordpress installations on the server, made a new installation in the same directory I originally had, copied the files back (the ones on the webserver which was a backup of just the wordpress directory) and that didn't work.

I need to tell my new install to use the files that are now currently in the directory where it is installed, and is the same directory as the initial installation.  I'm hoping there's an easy way to do this.

You have to go into PhpMyAdmin (most decent web hosts have a link to that in the Control Panel).

There, you have to find your wordpress database, find the site address table and edit the values there manually. And no, I don't remember the exact tables and values, but I've done this loads of times.
Thanks Johannes.

I see what you're talking about and after a bit more Googling found a bit more that's helpful, however its not enough. I'm assuming that my database is gone despite the referencing info still being there because it can't use it despite various methods of trying.

I've already wiped the directories, so I'm starting from scratch. It's thoroughly annoying to do, but on the positive side I've learned enough to do things a little better from the start, and I think I can make things look more the way I originally wanted to. Its only 2 weeks of work thus far.
I'm sure that down the road I'll be kicking myself and thinking "that should have been easy", which I'm also going to take as a positive thing.

On the one hand, "Damnit!" but on the other hand, I was already unhappy with the way I had done things and wished I'd started out differently with a couple of things.
