For a very long time now, I've been trying to look for a solution to why skype "hoggs" the isight camera in my Macbook Pro.  I know that skype is taking it, as I try to use things such as Dailybooth, ustream etc, and they don't recognize a camera.  But as soon as I quit skype, the isight is then recognized.

Is there a way to stop skype from "hogging" the isight.

P.S. Skype is running idle in the background with this, I wasn't inside a call, so skype shouldn't have the isight initialized.

Use camtwist as an in-between virtual camera driver. This way, Skype can't hog your iSight, and your camera should be available to multiple applications (via Camtwist). Only thing is, you have to keep camtwist open, and you need to configure camtwist to do this (which shouldn't be too hard).

The first mistake is using skype for anything. Why use a program made in china...when there are so many American/other based programs. Skype does nothing that Yahoo, or MSN hasn't already mastered years ago, it's  all about learning the programs that are available. Maybe your not American for which it's not important to keep things local...I personally (being an American) wont give China one more foothold in America. I took my computer to a family function last month, the few that were interested thought that I was on skype, weren't they surprised to find out I was Yahoo (at the time) having a video conference with other family members that weren't able to make it. And guess what... Yahoo also (and I believe MSN) has a smaller footprint on system resources. I've tested Skype despite my reservations about it, and I wasn't impressed by any aspect of it, especially the county it's from.

I have the Windows version of Skype installed. I went into Options and have it configured where it does not start up automatically when I reboot my machine. It only starts when I start the program.

When I end the program there is still a remnant of the application running. So, I right click on the icon and click Exit.

I imagine that there is something similar that you can do on your Macbook.
