More Information

In an update released today for the PS3, Sony officially deleted the option for installing another OS on a PS3. More information about this can be found here.

Do you think it is fair that Sony is blocking this feature on all PS3's? Did you ever use another OS on a PS3?

Personally this update doesn't effect me at all, but it doesn't seem right for Sony to decide to block this feature. I'm sure someone will find a way to hack the system and install other operating systems on the PS3 again, but it seems stupid that Sony decided to do this.

this only affects fat ps3s as otheros doesnt work on the slims

fortunately it is up the user to upgrade or downgrade their firmware to keep otheros

its just another silly "security" reason as they wanna prevent piracy....but theres always another way
their's another way to boot an OS on it for sure.
Not a Huge Deal. As many dont bother with it.
But it was a dick move that this update was mandatory in order to sign onto the playstation network.
that sucks. i just updated mine yesterday. hmm i guess i was hoping for more background music support. comeon sony how hard could it be.

It is probably more an issue of support than anything else. I don't have any problems with buying closed/proprietary systems. I think that companies secretly love Apple's model of closed systems. Look at Apple's bank account.
I don't think there's really a problem of support, they probably just don't want people using their device in ways that could effect other products they are trying to sell.

Apple's model has worked out nicely though for controlling the software and the hardware, but they still allow other operating systems to be installed on their machines.
its actually because the dev community figured out that they could dump raw data from ps3 discs on the hard drive through linux. Thats the majority of the reason they deleted the option was to stop people from sucessfully raw dumping there files onto the hardware itself, the only thing left to do was to write a boot and a hack for the ps3 software to recognize the data as an actual disc, and then bam, any game your willing to copy to the hd you can play without the disc.

Of course this is all relative now as there's a jailbreak for the ps3's security.
its really easy to install an os on a ps3, what you do, turn on the ps3, then walk over to your computer, start an os installation on computer, walk back to ps3 and play video games while install finishes.

p.s.
i once did this with my xbox while wiping my desktop.
