Geek Out!

More Information

I'm a computer tech, cleaning, fixing, repairing, and building computers since 1995, I've never lost a battle to an infected computer where I had to reinstall an Operating System. I'm just more persisent then they are. Ha. As the baddies find new ways to invade your computer (because of bad surfing habits) I constanly have to stay on my toes as the new crapware arrives and I figure out the best attacks on it when customers bring in their sick machines.

Recently I discovered this version of SuperAntispyware, which will run from a jump drive as stand alone, no internet connection needed to update. This is for computers that are heavily infected with malware that prevents the installing and running of any other anti-virus applications. This applies particularily to the "Fake Antivirus" that goes around endlessly and evolves nearly weekly to avoid removal.

There is also another great tool for the dreaded "Fake Antivirus".

Always follow up removal with a good Antivirus tool such as Microsoft Security Esentials or Avast!

A lot can be said here, more then I could possibly type in a discussion, but this is just the basics in case someone has a near dead computer they want to resurrect.

Basically, proper surfing habits will keep to safe more then any tools.

Wow, that is REALLY great advice, DTM! Thank you VERY much for sharing that, because a friend of mine is in fact dealing with an infected laptop right now!
I'm glad I may have been able to help anyone at all! :D
I just ran into another infected customer machine last night, this tool got me up and running in no time.

Very powerful indeed!
I've used Super Anti spy ware before. When I had an old PC before I knew what I was doing I got a fake anti virus on it and got SASW on there and it got rid of it. It made the PC usable but it couldn't shift a rootkit on there, so I had to put Norton on there, which did get rid of it. But for a free program I thought it was very good, I've been reading about Comodo internet security which is meant to be very good as well, a full package for free, it also has a Sandbox which is unusual for a freebie
Microsoft Security Essentials deals nicely with Root Kits. There are also specialized Root Kit removers. TDSSkiller is a good one, as this is the most popular Root Kit currently going around. http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684

Microsofts own OneCare cleaner works nicely too. http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm

There are a ton of tools out there, but 95% of them are pretty worthless, I've all too tested many. :D
agreed I eventually bought Kaspersky which nailed it (actually I got another PC after a while because the other was old), I really like it I've had no problems since! Now I know what I'm doing I should be OK, I didn't know what malware was at the time!
Can M$ Security Essentials run at the same time as my normal AV software, or must I shutdown my AV software?
Thanks,
Dan
It's a good idea to never run more then one AV at a time. Side effects and conflicts can really wreck your system, I've seen it before.
Yeah don't run more than one at the same time, I did it when I first got my computer a few years ago, I had about three on there at the same time because I thought it would be better than one, I was getting pop ups every 5 minutes with conflicts, one was zone alarm which is well known for having many pop up fire wall settings. Stick to one like security essentials and use comodo free fire wall, or they do a whole internet security suite for free also.
Perhaps someone HERE can help. I have picked up a bug that I can find NO info on. It causes Google Search to "forward" to another site when the results should appear. I would have thought that SOMEWHERE I could have found a fix for this, but.....
I've never heard of that before have you done a scan with your anti virus software to make sure you haven't got anything on your computer?
If you have a router, do a complete reset on it. I've seen some diabolical things actually change your routers proxy/IP settings. Your internet gets routed to some site in Russia, at least that's what I have found twice so far.
