I use Ubuntu 8.04, have had virtually no problems. Works great for me.

Ubuntu...for apparently everyone but humans according to Xubuntu :P
aperantly humans are mice to on xubuntu
I would suggest using Linux Mint 6 since you are a new comer. It will be alot easier for you.

Linux Mint 6 is based on Ubuntu, but alot easier and makes it easy for any new user to use.
I run Ubuntu 8.10 it rocks very stable
Why not try them all & then decide? They are all great.
Have you been to Distrowatch.com lately there are hundreds of linux distros to try.
This is the best idea, then you decide for yourself and learn a lot too.
Every distribution has its up's and down's.
Out-of-the-box: I'd recommend Linux Mint, for it comes with codecs that would make you feel at home (using Windows).
Easy-Installation: I'd recommend Ubuntu.
Applications & Installation: I'd recommend OpenSuse (latest versions), for the "one-click-install".
