More Information

I have a couple personal web servers running in my home office using Ubuntu Server. But, also I notice that all my web hosting accounts use CentOS. In your opinion, which linux distribution is best for a web server? From the little research I did on Google, it seems that most people prefer Ubuntu Server. I kinda do too, but it concerns me simply because most all web hosting companies such as HostGator, BlueHost, etc... use CentOS.

I'm pretty particular about things, and with my personal web server, I like to maintain them as close to being just like production web servers from major web hosting companies. I guess in a nutshell the opinions I'd like to know is why do major hosting companies use CentOS over Ubuntu Server? And lastly, is CentOS really better than Ubuntu Server? Like I said above, I tend to favor Ubuntu, but the only reason for me is just because I haven't really used anything else. What are your thoughts?

Hey Garry,
I'm not too big a linux user but from what my linux friend has told me, CentOS is better suited for server usage than ubuntu server. why i am not too sure, i am aware though that while a little over half of websites use unix and just slightly less use linux, the amount of CentOS users is almost triple that of Ubuntu and double that of Red Hat. this is most likely becuase CentOS is a free version of Red Hat, and everyone knows that Red Hat means business. while i don't like paying for my linux, red hat has always been from what i understand the most stable therefore a os based off of red hat would make the most sense for a linux server because of it's expected reliability compared to other oses. have fun with your webserver and imho i would use CentOS.
