Geek Out!

Now that the pollen season is over, there is no more excuses to avoid
going outside once a while.  Like many gamers, I would sit at my
computer until I'm bored of the game I was playing.  Most of the time,
that can be up to 8 straight hours, and that is certainly not healthy.  If you are like me, then you certainly have noticed just how extremely
tired you fell after playing on the computer for extensive a mount of time; in addition, you probably have noticed some color changing of
your face or even your eyes.  Oh, and don't forget about the headaches..

Although I'm not an expert in the fields of health, I hypothesize that such indoor life style is definitely not good for your overall well being and will probably decrease your life span.  Thus, I want to discuss about ways that you can do to be a computer geek, but while staying healthy.

First, acquire the habit of taking small breaks.  Here is what I would recommend: Use the computer  intensively in no more than 3 hours, and add a 5 min. break each hour.  If you need to use the computer for more than 3 hours, take at least a 30 min. break in between sessions.  Use the breaks to stand up from your sit to move around so the blood from your legs will start circulating again and will be less likely to form blood clots.  In addition, when your entire body is moving, the lymph system will also start circulating (lymph system is your immune circulatory system , and it will only move by the movement of your body).

Secondly, make sure the mouse you are using is comfortable.  Place it at a height so that you don't need to raise your lower arm too much to grab the
mouse.  If the table is too high and you cannot do anything about it,
try increasing the height of your seat instead.  This adjustment will
reduce the strain on your wrist when you play or work on your computer.

Third, clean your working area.  Indoor pollution such as dust or mold can be inhaled and cause allergic reactions.  Mold in particularly is one of
the most hazardous pollution.  The reason is that mold will grow
extremely fast in areas that are wet and fairly dark.  If you have
carpet in your home, be sure to vacuum once a month to keep them dry.
Make sure your air filter is clean.  Most indoor air is recycled unless
you open the window.  Change your filter once every 6 months.  Also, if
there is a lot of dust collecting on your PC, keyboard, or monitor,
clean it with some monitor cleaning spray solution.

Lastly, go outside and let the sun shine on you once a while and get some fresh air.  The sun's ray will kill many bacteria and virus that are living on the surface of your skin or hair.  This is why geeks have the stereo type of having zits all over their face.  Also, going outside will help relax your eyes and allow the muscles to adjust your lenses to view more distant objects once a while.  I highly suggest wearing sun glasses to protect your eyes from UV lights of the sun.

If you have tried some of my suggestions stated above, please let me know how they have worked out for you.  If you have additional suggestions or knowledge of this topic, feel free to reply me some feedback.

I don't like the hype about healthiness these days, people are made to believe that they should work out like idiots and that just about everything can (and most likely will) give you cancer. Don't get me wrong, I do believe in working out and I think that people should exercise as much as possible, but I don't believe in the scare stories that float around.

People's health has been turned into a huge industry with books, magazines, TV-shows and so on, which I think is just plain wrong.
Good points. We spend way too much time on our computers. That is just a fact.

In the spring I get outside more because I have to do yard work. Real work like mowing the lawn, racking, weed eating, and planting and tending to plants. That is if I don't want to be an outcast in my community.

Since I stated getting the exercise and sun that I need, I feel better. Plus, I think better. Not saying that I do not get sore from all of that work but there is life outside of our cubby holes.

Now Geeks, go for it. You will be surprised at how wonderful it feels to be out in the sunlight. :)
pollen season is over? what are you smoking man lol
Reaper dear, surly you aren't speaking to me. :)
lol no, i'm just going wtf @ koko :)
I should have remembered about your goofy attitude. We all need more fun in our lives and less drama...don't ya think?
Eat healthily, exercise hard, die anyway.

The only thing I would say is to flex your muscles every so often, draining the blood out of your arms by raising them over your head for a minute or so every few hours helps reduce the chance of carpal tunnel, that doesn't just apply to computers though, anything where you keep moving your hands and fingers while they're below your heart will cause the same problem.

There's no point in being paranoid of the possibility of things going wrong, but it can be good to get away from the computer, of course it's been months since I've had time to spend more than few hours at my computer in a day, maybe I'm just jealous of all you guys with free time.
From personal experience I agree with everything in the article. Gyms are not necessary for keeping in good health if you can walk briskly for at least one hour a day, through a nice park. That said, I've done that, I've done gyms, and stopped at traditional martial arts as my choice of physical activity. The added benefit is that small joint locks prevent carpal tunnel syndrome.
You don't need to work out like a nut 30 mi is suffice but gyms aren't necessary buT they do help. Martial arts is great physical excercise. What is important is that you target specific parts of your body regularly. It's all about what your goals are. If it is to live a long illness free life workout in a healthy manner. Not saying a person will not get sick but it reduces the risks greatly. Experienced this personally.
It's called having friends & getting a life xD
I dont know where you live but pollen season is not over where I live in missouri.

Ok your first point of not more then 3 hour increments. If someone doesn't get out of their "chair" in 3 hours they got problems even if it is to get a drink or use the restroom. Or heck eat?

AS for the third one. I would say if you have carpet and decent wood flooring underneath rip it out asap. I think that carpet personally is one of the worst inventions ever made.

AS for the sunshine yes you do need it. Trust me I have read a lot about this during the case of being pregnant. AS of right now I do see sunlight a minimum of once a day even if it is just to go water my plants in the morning or to go see the lake. Or normally to get in my car. As for zits. I think that has more to do with how uncleanly people are. I use face wash that is walmart brand and drink my 8 glasses of water per day. Which I would say when I did not do that my skin is way more zit infested then if I do. It has to do with hydration of your skin. Yet again I will have to disagree somewhat not having your eyes get used to sunlight can give you horrible migraines. And wearing sunglasses all the time can damage your eyesight somewhat also.
also careful on the carbs because sitting down for a long time can make you crave them...another thing is sleep, if you havent been getting enough sleep your body doesnt process sugar well upping your potential for diabetes.
