You mean Re-formatting.
I don't do my back up files from the beginning just incase things go wrong.
I normally start with running my ant-virus and most important programs then once the coast is clear I re-install my backed up files.
i have not had to reinstall windows on my pc since i installed 7, and even then i didn't need to, i just felt like it, vista ran perfect for the 3 years i used it before 7. never had a virus either. so i cant really answer this question.
i re-install every s 3-6 months, keeps my pc fast and gets rid of crap that i dont need
WOW. That is a lot.

The way to get around that is have any army of thumb drives, and save every thing to those. Then format those guys, saves A LOT OF TIME

I hate reinstalling all the programs and so on. In my country we don't get OS discs with a lot of crap included. Perhaps 5 things. My XP disc game with also a additional disk where were all of the other stuff, but I didn't want them so I didn't use it - I got a clean install. First of all I would update. Then I would reinstall everything and move over.
Windows UpdateSSSSSSSS, and AntiVirus
I never need to restore my files because I save them on a separate drive which is weekly backed-up, so my first move is to format th system drive, install OS, updates from OS and plug all devices to make sure they work fine (drivers), then I install my essential apps, set-up libraries and apps and I'm good to go.
activate the nic card LOL...then any other drives and updates after that!
Install Windows updates and update AV. Usually I've just restored using an image of the HD that has windows setup the way I want it. Then I restore my files that have automatically been backup to a USB HD.
I always install the latest service pack, the latest version of my browser, and my antivirus before I even connect the machine to the network. After that, I catch up on all the Windows updates.
Once those are taken care of, I begin installing my personal software and moving my data back on.
1. Run a secure wipe of the OS drive
2. Install Win 7
3. Once at the desktop install my drivers
4. Install my security software
5. Do the Windows updates
6. Install my programs
7. Check Windows update again
8. Perform all my tweaks to the OS
9. Add my bookmarks, and plug-ins to Firefox
First of all I am a Mac user. Make sure I have a recent backup or try to make a backup before I go any further. I don't care too much for time machine so I use Carbon Copy Cloner http://www.bombich.com/ Then I reformat the internal hard drive. Switch the start up drive. Kick off Carbon Copy Cloner to get back up and running quickly. Sometimes though I have had to start from square one after wiping the hard drive and reinstall the OS from the install disk. That's painful because then you must re-install each and every app.
