Hi, everyone. I want to install an old version on Windows on my computer for fun. I'm trying to decide whether I should get Windows 95, 98, 98SE, 2000, or ME. What do you think I should get? Also, do you know which of these operating systems are compatible with an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400? Thanks

i recommend this obviously in a virtual machine.
Just because their are going to be absolutely NO HARDWARE support.

None of them are compatible with Dual-cores even.
Windows 2000 support is seen around with some laptops and computers with dual cores though.
my Compaq presario CQ50 bought in august 2008, has windows 2000 support, so 2000 should be ok.

Do this in a virtual Machine, though. Should work, You'll have driver issues obviously but w/e :P should get online.
I would use Windows 98SE although it will not work on that CPU as it is too new. I might buy an old Windows 98SE machine just for fun as you can get them for almost nothing nowadays.
I'm with gibson on this one. While 2000 may support your cpu, theres no guarantee it will support your board, and for the most part your board probably wont have drivers available for 2000.
running an older os on a quad sounds pretty silly but whatever lol

i would go with 2000 as its essentially the same as xp, only without the eye candy
:P in virtual machine they should all run fine.

don't Expect to do much though i mean, what do those old OS's have any use for.
Maybe just internet browsing, seeing as Adobe Flash still goes right to...
well flash player 10.1 doesn't go any older then Windows 200
And for Flash player nine, no older then windows 98 and Flash player 9 is still pretty much same as 10.1
So VIRTUAL MACHINE IT, should work like any other OS, only its older and virtually feature less.
I'd Say it will obviously run fast (But it could be very slow) as it may only utilize a certain amount of the hardware, depending on the Operating system.

i tested a old Windows 98 Once, I was on Youtube watching 360P Video just fine, with Flash player 9.
this was in May 2010 lol, Internet explorer 5.0 Lol Everything was generally fast, the test was done on a Old Pentium 4 Rig, Course i Don't Own any more then 2 Computers myself, i did the at a friends, who had an old p4 3ghz laying around (bought 2007 Model) good stuff. Not much is rly supporting the old OS's anymore =/
crap like this is why its hard to ignore you, as you just can't stop replying to other members responses

my post was to brice, not to you gib
It really depends on what you want to do with it.
If you want to do some retro gaming, then I would stay with Windows 98SE. (just remember the computer cannot have any more than 512 MB of memory, that is because it is Windows 98SE's upper memory limit.)
If you were looking to do more networking and Internet connectivity then I would go with Windows 2000, and update to Service Pack 4, then finally to Rollup 1:

windows 98
DOS!!!

Do it in a virtual machine for sure! Do them all if you have disks for them all, or at least do the ones you have.
Millennium edition ftw, man i loved that version (yes i know im weird)
All Should run fine in virutal Machine lol, but the OS is only going to utilize the max it's built to.
Because back then we didn't have quad's, none of these are going to use more then 1 core anyways, Possibly not even more then 1.3ghz with windows 98 or such, I'm thinking 512 DDR for up to Windows 98SE
