The World, or Universe of Astronomy

Astronomy is a fascinating science, and one of the oldest. In fact it's the very first natural science.

It began quiet slow, and was more philosophical than a true scientific field. Yet over time it has helped us better understand the universe. Even today there are new theories that come up, and old ones replaced.

Is there life out there besides us?
What is at the center of a back hole?
What will we do when the Sun grows to large?
What is the smallest element? if there really is such a thing.
Does a graviton exist, or is gravity just a side effect of Mass?

So many questions still remain to be answered.

Newfound exoplanet may turn to dust: Planet’s dust cloud may explain strange patterns of light from its star

Researchers have detected a possible planet, some 1,500 light years away, that appears to be evaporating under the blistering heat of its parent star. The scientists infer that a long tail of debris -- much like the tail of a comet -- is following the planet, and that this tail may tell the story of the planet's disintegration. According to the team's calculations, the tiny exoplanet, not much larger than Mercury, will completely disintegrate within 100 million years.

What astronauts ate: Apollo 10 space meal, 1969

This Smithsonian Snapshot marks the May 18, 1969, launch of the Apollo 10 mission with an astronaut's space meal from that mission.

Days of 'gizmo' launches return: NASA team to test new vehicle-descent technologies

NASA technologists will get a chance next summer to relive the good old days when Agency engineers would affix space-age gizmos to rockets just to see if the contraptions worked. In what will be the first of four high-altitude balloon flights to begin in the summer of 2013, technologists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., and Wallops Flight Facility in Wallops Island, Va., are preparing to test new deceleration devices that could replace current descent technologies for landing ever-larger payloads at higher elevations on Mars.

Yes good group... sorry, can't stop chuckling at this article/headline...

Well DUH! Just plain damnned common sense! The Earth has been struck at least as many times as our moon by impactors.. Imapactors contain minerals , metals ext.. of COURSE there will be metoric deposits! \

I swear, I think that is up there with the research being done on why we get music stuck in our heads!

Astronomy is the first math a true magic.
A mystery that enfolds all truth.
The horizon that forever retreats.

Excellent idea for a group. It should be massive.
Here's a deep sky pic I took last month:

I would have totally joined this sooner, but just now finding out about it for some reason. Great idea for a group. Ive always had an interest in Astronomy. I could lay outside and look at the stars and the moon forever. Last night I was outside and I happen to see the ring around the moon for the first time ever. Pretty cool.
I managed to take a pic, but it was dark and my camera sucks, but you can see it somewhat. Pretty awesomeness!!!

NASA isn't the only game in the astronomy world. Take it international. ; )
