The Copy Machine and you...

Have you ever photocopied important documents in the office? Passports, bank statements, drivers license and the like?

All modern copying machines have a hard disk drive and it is very likely the image of those copies are still on that drive. Imagine what happens when the lease is up. The office gets a new machine and the old one with scans of your personal information gets shipped to Russia or maybe Nigera.

Identity Theft Expert: LifeLock Ruling Good for Prevention

Identity theft expert John Sileo believes that LifeLock has been the victim of its own type of identity theft, and it will ultimately improve their identity monitoring product.

Recently, LifeLock, the identity theft prevention marketing machine, lost a piece of who they are (were) when a judge removed their most fundamental prevention tool -- automatic fraud alerts on consumer credit reports. The… Continue

Identity Theft Speaker on Traveling Safety

Traveling Safety has become a discipline of its own since the introduction of identity theft. Your biggest concern is no longer be physical in nature (pickpockets, hotel theft, muggings); the value of the personal information you carry as you travel is far more valuable than the cash in your wallet.

It's fun to plan the vacation of our dreams. I can taste the pasta primavera as I read about that out-of-the way trattoria half way down the ancient… Continue

Data Breach Security: Why TJX is Your Fault (and Mine)

TJX lost somewhere between 40 and 90 million customer records, and there is a good chance yours was one of them if you shop at T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods or A.J. Wright. If only 10% of those breached records were ever used to commit identity fraud (let’s say 7.5 million records, to be conservative), at the average cost of identity theft recovery ($700), the damage to you and me is approximately $490 Million. So TJX paid about a 2% penalty for… Continue

Have You Had a Device Stolen?

Last Friday, my mothers phone was stolen. We called Verizon and they were able to render it useless so whoever stole it can not make calls. So, my Mom ended up getting a new phone and things turned out fine. Still, if you own a mobile device, you need to keep track of it so you do not get in a situation like my Mom was in. There are two topics you need to worry about when keeping your mobile device safe. One, make sure you keep tabs on your device at all times to prevent theft. Two, know what… Continue

Phishing Attacks Rise Dramatically in 2008

Identity Theft Expert - Speaker

Stupid people get hooked by phishers. You have to be a complete idiot to get sucked into a scam email that has typos making requests that are geared toward naïve simple minded pea brain fools. Right? Yes? No? So why have phishing attacks risen dramatically in 2008? That’s 66% higher than in 2007.

Have we gotten dumber or are the attackers getting smarter?

RSA concluded that phishing attacks rose to an unprecedented…

Bank Robberies Spike, Blame The Economy?

Robert Siciliano

Identity Theft Speaker Expert

Often I’m called to provide perspective on breaking news as it relates to personal security, violence and fraud. Tonight it was bank robbery. In Boston a white male suspect in his 20’s has robbed at least 4 banks since Feb. 3rd and two of those were done today within a few miles of each other.

In the first, he went up to a teller who was in training, startled, she said she did not have any money in the drawer and he left the bank…

Preventing Inside Jobs, Keeping Inside Hackers - Out

Are you familiar with a “Logic Bomb”? This is a brilliant piece of code, a virus, designed for destruction. The goal of a logic bomb is to disable existing systems that may monitor data, protect it, back it up or access it. A logic bomb is designed to multiply like any virus and spread throughout a network multiplying its effects.

In a…

Tech Executives Are The New Sexy

Robert Siciliano Identity Theft Expert - Speaker

Not to long ago the CIO was a pocket protected, sugared up, soda pop drinking, potato chip eating, caffeinated, non sociable…..well….geek. Not anymore. But you knew that. Serious, Geek is getting even more sexy, stripper pole sexy. A familiar story, a colleague of mine built a tech startup, it has gone from $4 million to $175 million in 3 years. He tells me behemoth tech companies literally send scantily clad hotties…

Email Dilema

I do this every December. For some stupid reason, I will subscribe to several newsletters over the course of time, vowing to read them, but I never do. So instead, they fill the folders they were assigned to, only to have me delete them weeks later. When emails reach the triple digit, I finally come out of denial and delete most of them. It isn't until December when I decide to actually unsubscribe.

Call me the packrat of email.

Unfortunately, this isn't the real problem. The…

China Reveals a "New Fingered Way" to Stop Drunk Driving

In China alone, the death tolls due to drunk driving rise over 50,000, with almost 250,000 traffic accidents caused by drunks as well. Until now, there was no definitive way to stop people from driving drunk; regardless of preaching about it day in and day out, it is just a reality that it still happens. Two students in China unveiled a new way of preventing drunks from even starting the car, let alone drive it. Presented at China's third annuel Road Safety Expo, Zhao Wencai and Li Zhoumu, from… Continue
