Geek Out!

More Information

Am I insane to add yet one more social networking layer to my life?

Can you over-saturate your online life? Seriously, I skim/read 100s of RSS feeds, I've had a livejournal community for 8 years, I'm on twitter and facebook, plus I write for two blogs. Oh, and I'm actively networking within the Toronto Tech and Social Media communities and their events. I'm one of the coordinators of Toronto's Girl Geek dinners. Geeks looks interesting so I'll dabble some. You never know what you can learn and share.

Why are you here?

geeks is my chill out zone. This is where I come when I want to mix with people who see the world in a similar way to me and have the same obsession with gadgets as me.

I don't work around computers, so my online time is limited to my spare time. My spare time is also the time I get to spend with my family and to slepp etc, therefore my online time is limited often to less than an hour a day. I therefore want to get as much value out of that time as possible. I check facebook, friend feed and geeks to see what's been going on while i've been away from my keyboard. I can get twitter on my mobile phone so I have that with me all the time, this is why I am most active on twitter btw.

Our onlife lives seem to be spread over loads of different services nowadays. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to centralise it all into one big feed that we could go to each time we log on and from this feed go on to whatever takes our fancy at any given time.

I do think its possible to overdo it just a bit. I personally only have my tech blog, facebook, and geeks. I occasionally do a little editing for a local tech club around here. I don't need to market myself in any other way really. My friends are on facebook, my geek friends are here, and my name is out there professionally with my editing and my blog. I do happen to find myself checking geeks more than my facebook recently though...

Twitter, facebook and the like have millions of members... I think Geeks has around 25k members... for the size of the Internet it makes Geeks like a small club where people understand super complex terms like, "motherboard" or "cpu." and other terms general public refuses to wrap their simple minds around.

I agree with Sarah (MacBaby16). There is loads of knowledge here and people who readily share their skills. Hope you really give the Geeks site some time, Heather; I think you will find it well worthwhile.

Geeks is my favorite social network. I have met so many great people here. It's my escape from reality where I can just chat with great people and have fun :)
