Apple Controlling the Apple Store Too Much?

Just about everywhere on the net, you see someone commenting on Apple’s recently high disapproval rate for apps being released in the appstore. Apple has always had certain restrictions but after giving GV (Google Voice) the boot in the appstore, there has been a huge internet riot against Apple.

In my opinion, I think Apple has gone too far in some cases. I know that their customers are in mind when approving/disapproving apps but after the statement that Google Latitude was “too confusing” really pissed me off.

Who do they think they are to decide what’s too confusing or simple enough for us? As if the iphone isn’t the most advanced smart phone on the market right now and we haven’t already had to figure out a lot of “confusing” things about it.

And what’s this about kicking GV out of the appstore because it uses some of the same features already on the iphone? Google has been one of the biggest and best developers for the iphone, especially with the native youtube app and search in Safari. It seems to me that Apple is being too restricting when it comes to the iPhone. Think of it this way…what if we weren’t allowed to run google chrome or safari on our PC’s because it uses the same features as Internet Explorer. It wouldn’t make any sense at all.

Luckily, GV has been released in Cydia but what if Apple had succeeded months ago in getting jailbreaking illegal? We would be without this wonderful app that should have been kept in the appstore. Stuff like this is what makes jailbreaking your iphone or ipod touch great because you can defy the man (apple) and still get their rejected apps onto your iphone/ipod touch.

What are your opinions on Apple not allowing certain apps in the appstore or just your opinion about Apple or ATT, overall? Please, leave your answers in the comments section below. I would love to hear other people’s opinions about this.

That's why so many people jailbreak. It's too many restrictions and the iphone is capable of so much. Apple was great with imputting the appstore but developers are getting screwed for not being able to create some of the best apps because Apple or ATT is limiting their creativity.

Well, Apple owns the store, therefore Apple makes the rules. But it is kind of f**king the developers in the face.

I have no opinion on AT&T because I don't use AT&T even though I'm an iPhone user. But I can say that, the iPhone has not been up to it's full potential in any country in the world because of AT&T.

And most of the iPhone's problems have been due to AT&T since the iPhone works fine here in Estonia (Northern Europe).

Sorry it's taken me awhile to respond to everyone's comments. My laptop crashed.

For Franklin, I don't think they blocked skype. I had it deleted from my phone and was able to reinstall it with no problem.

Keith, Apple does treat them like sh*t. It's so hard for people to get approved and they almost always have to make some type of tweaks to their app to please Apple just to still be denied.

Jas, I agree that most of apple's policies have to do with ATT. I'll be posting another blog later on today that you may want to check out with my thoughts on Apple & ATT together.

Dean, You may also want to check out my next blog. I think it's crap that we pay hundreds of dollars for a phone and we can't do what we want with OUR OWN phone. If we pay the $300-$500 they demand then technically it is our phone now and not apple's. I'll try to post my thoughts in a blog today if I can get my brother's computer again.

Thanks everyone for commenting and leaving your opinions!

The argument against the right to turn down an app is valid if you look at it from the perspective that the iphone is a computer and the apple app store is the only way to install software to it. You can jailbreak the phone, but that is not really a valid point as Apple is seeking to, and has been seeking to, make jailbreaking illegal. Even if you just want to write and install your own software to your own iphone, you have to pay Apple a periodic fee for a licence to do so because although you can download the tools (and they don't have to be apple tools), write it, and compile it, you can't actually install it to your device's filesystem without forking over the cash, and forking it over on a regular basis as well.

There certainly is a trend of Apple bashing for now. I don't know if its justified or not. One thing that should be put into perspective when looking at it though, is that Apple is a corporation as is any other. They are not going to be fair, nice, cooperative, or warm and fuzzy unless its profitable to do so. The customer service that Apple has been praised for is nothing more than what it is, which is their perception of how to best maximise profits... for now, and when that stops being the way to best maximise profits, customer service will suck. Same thing goes for the quality of hardware, software, etc. The bottom, apparently, is that denying google a native app was deemed to be more profitable than making users happy and thats simply the way it is. The problem is that as product owners, we made wrong assumptions about the nature of the company we bought from, and now we look and are disappointed that they fell from the pedestal that we put them on to begin with. Apple never climbed up on a pedestal... Apple consumers put them there - that's half of it anyway. The consumer's half.

I personally don't care about google voice because it doesn't effect me and isn't available where I live. I do, however, hope that jailbreaking does not go the way of being illegal, and if it is deemed as such then I hope projects to replace the OS get somewhere a lot faster than what happening for now, even though I probably would not use it as it wouldn't be a mature replacement for very long before I upgraded.

Selling hardware and telling consumers what they can and can not install on it is annoying. I understand Apple wanting to protect their reputation by keeping apps off that would be security risks or could access the hardware in a damaging way. At the same time, my iphone is mine... a hardware device - a computer, that I bought for a crap load of money, and its incredibly irritating that I can't do what I feel I have the right to do on my own hardware unless I'm willing to fork out even more cash. I paid a lot for the phone, I pay for my software from the app store, and I should have the right to install my own (or anyone elses) binaries or scripts without paying even more.
As for the Apple store itself, that I agree is Apples business that they can do what they want with. I can like it or dislike it independantly... I suppose the problem that people have might be that the iphone is a really awesome device without anything to compete in the same class with it, and the Apple store is the only avenue of installing things for many people.

I guess its more how the store is implemented as the only means of new software, that causes the frustration, for everyone regardless of what they are frustrated over.

apple does have some restrictions ( i havent had any troubles) but AT&T is really holding the iphone back a bit. I was really hoping for tethering when 3.0 was released, but AT&T would not allow so much data transfer. and they didnt even activate MMS for the Iphone. really i would honestly prefer verizon over AT&T, but im kind of stuck with them. I'm not surprised, and I think it's a good idea they have some quality control for the iPhone/iTouch, that way, people will have an easier time, though, they should make it quality control only.(As in, not allowing things like spam and apps that may harm the iPhone or are just plain illegal.)Basically, Apple treats its developers like **** they've certainly scared me off.... They're taking advantage of the fact the iPhone/iTouch is really popular.
Apple: Stop treating people like ****
