AT&T DSL with Actiontec Modem (OSX+WIN)

As many of you know, right now AT&T has an incredible deal for hi-speed Internet and the deal is basically right now Approx. $15/Mo for 3Mbps or so for 1-Yr. If you’re like me, you don’t have nor desire to
obtain a Home phone and thankfully, this service does NOT require it but
does require you to have a telephone line (Your cord will be hooked-up
into this jack).

First of all, you can pickup an Actiontec for under $50 from Best Buy, but do know getting support for it is pretty much non-existent and specially for help if you call AT&T.

Now, find your nearest phone jack and plug in the phone cord to the wall and grab your Modem (Assuming you already unpacked the modem + power) and put the phone cord in and power her up.

Tip: Do NOT use a router when you first setup a Modem as the configuration file will obtain the MAC Address and assign it an IP and it can be a pain to restore to factory default and will just give you
issues and could give you a ton’s of valid reasons but I warned you,
should be good enough :) .

Now take the Ethernet cord (Normally Yellow) and plug it in to the “Internet” port, as their really is only 1-Available port on the Modem. Now, plug the other end of the Ethernet to your computer.

Good news, you’re almost done… Now a Power light and most likely DSL as well as Ethernet light will be on but NOT the Internet/Activity. This is OK. Now, load up Firefox or Safari (Windows run Internet Explorer,
yes trust me on this) and in the address bar copy/paste (or type)
http://192.168.0.1 and you will not be prompted for a User/Pass as one
doesn’t truly exist and if you do get asked, box that baby back up and
return it as it’s used!

Ok, you want to run the Basic Setup and want to select the PPoE option under section “DSL Connection” and it will ask for a User/Pass, terrific. The username and password is as follows:

User: attreg@att.net
Password: attreg

Now go ahead and “OK” the settings (Note: For those in select states you may need further configuration of other features but read your states requirements for DSL.)

Since you’ve done this, go forth and type in any website in the address bar and you’ll notice anywhere you try to go it will cloak the address and force you to go to the AT&T Registration and
Installation Wizard that is web based (Unless you perform this step in
Safari, which you will be asked to download the file as a *.dmg. Save it
and Mount (Double-click the icon in the Download location) and launch
the Binary (File) by double-clicking the file and the self-step-by-step
installer will launch.) and follow the prompts as you’re required to
fill in your new account information (i.e. First/Last name, Last 4-Digit
SS#, create a AT&T ID (New Members), and obviously need your new
Account Number or Telephone (Note: Don’t have a phone line? The line
that is activated is auto-assigned an Account number, this is also used
for Billing/Support and is required).

Now, if you’re on OSX you most likely will have a hell of a time after creating your AT&T ID and AT&T checking your Hardware/Misc. items but it most likely will hang for a very long time,
it won’t likely timeout as it will just keep going on forever. Good
news, your ID is usually created immediately and unfortunately a bug in
OSX (or AT&T process) and won’t update your modem with the new
settings that must be issued.

Log back in to the Modem via Web Browser and go to Basic Setup and for username this must replace attreg@att.net with your new AT&T ID (e.g. memymoe@att.net) and your password is NOT your regular account
password, you must insert your Network Password which is really strong
in strength and is the only thing that will work.

Now you will have issues getting all solid lights, so you need to go to the Modem page and find where it says “Disconnect” and do so. After, go ahead and press “Connect”.

Please now remove the Phone cord for 15 Seconds and remove the Power Cord. Wait 10 Seconds and plug the power back in and wait till everything is lit up and insert the power cord and eventually the Red to
Orange will turn Green.

If you have an issue you can contact me, I am happy to help. If you call AT&T you will be forced to pay $49.95/Hr for someone to make it so you can have the service you’re paying for.

Hope this helps any of you that had the same hours and hours of hating life…

Finally figure out the router/ modem problem. This is how I solved it for others who may be facing a similar issue. I went to the Actiontec site and downloaded the firmware, This is the warning attached (It is not to be used on any other model of router or gateway. This is a
NCS (Non-Customer Specific) Firmware, and is not intended as an Upgrade
for ANY ISP Specific Firmware, regardless of version number. Therefore,
you should not load a NCS Firmware Upgrade on to a gateway that
currently has an ISP Specific Firmware installed.). I took the chance and ignored the warning to erase the verizon firmware which came with the Actintec 704wg. It worked proving the warning to be false. I then proceeded to follow the directions from Lance with a small difference. I substituted the VPI 0, with 8 for my region. From there it was smooth sailing. Thanks Lance for working with me in between the New Year celebrations, you are a true geek....lol. Hope this is helpful for someone else. Many thanks

If I was at home I would be happy to skype. Currently been replying via my iPhone but while I am out for new years, I will do my best to respond abs get you online.

If you have a router, unplug it immediately and get it out of the way. Reset the modem by plugging the power and put in the reset hole and plug in with the reset wait 10secs and unplug without the reset. Also, if you plan on using a router, without plugging in the cord from the modem, do a direct connect to your computer and login to the control panel as you want to change it's 192.168.1.1 IP to 192.168.2.1 as you will have a conflict (Normally) with the devices.

Also once reset, do a ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew.

Have you completed a web-based install from Verizon?

Do you have a router hooked up? Did you ever have a router hooked up? Extremely important and if yea to either, we must do a whole different step.

Now, what is the IP the computer is getting (Go to command prompt and type ipconfig)? Also what step are you at with the Verizon Setup? I have never personally done a Verizon setup, sobi will need more info from you in order to help you troubleshoot.

Also mind you the VPI can change state to state and PPoE must be enabled. Also since it's Verizon, try entering the account name without the email (e.g. @ATT.net).

Ok I forgot to mention the Actiontec was originally from Verizon and is firmware version 3.20.3.3.5.0.9.2.14 which has verizon's logo all over it. Not sure how different the ones from best buy are but, figured it should not matter. Was able to finally get it to access the web by changing the VPI from 0 to 8 ( found that in a forum) so I'm getting close. still need help however. Only web page is verizon's installation page.

Are you using AT&T as your provider shell? If so, have you setup the option for PPoE as the Login/Auth method? If not, you must as you will NOT get any kind of internet. Now, I am hoping you've been using a Ethernet cord otherwise if you've been using wireless to upgrade firmware, unfortunately a 1 of 500 chance you failed/corrupted the on board firmware via the upgrade.

Bad news? You tell Actiontec or anyone you tried to upgrade the firmware and it failed, you will not only be ignored but you will not usually receive any form of support and lastly a refund as they will find almost anything you do step wise to be "wrong". They will go through a million things to say you are at fault. So, let's keep that quite.

Now, let's determine what's going on here... Login to the Modem via Browser (192.168.0.1) and go to Login to my gateway>Wireless Setup>Check-mark the WPA-PSK circle. You will need to create a pre-shared key (password) and click Save.

Unplug your Ethernet cord and let's go to your wireless connector software or use windows built-in Wi-Fi selector (Varies on OS). Find your network name and select it as it should ask for a password/passphrase/shared-key, go and put it in and Connect.

My other question is, once you made sure if you connect via PPoE and you have the user/login correct, do you get your lights back? If yes, which? Just mind you, if you reset the modem, your connection settings are removed. If you ARE infact using AT&T, you must put in the AT&T ID in the Username field a and Network Password for the Password field. If you DO NOT, no way you're getting any lights.
