More Information

Every time I go on a website that has the words "Google Chrome" side by side - weather it be talking about the browser or the OS - I also see a comment that goes along the lines of this "Chrome OS will FAIL! (Insert reason here). This is not true, and I will tell you why.
I'm 14 and going into 9th grade. 94% of my friends and/or people I know (in school) only go onto the computer to go online. Chrome OS would be perfect for these people. Yes, they still type school papers with Microsoft Word, BUT if they don't use any of the big features of Microsoft Word. They only use the ones that are also available in Google Docs. They also download a program once-in-a-while, but nothing to fancy (meaning it would probably be something that can be found as a web app in the Chrome webstore, too.)
The remaining 6% of my friends and/or people I know (again, in school) use a lot of a lot computer apps and/or game. Chrome OS would be also be perfect for these people, but they would still need their Windows/Linux (none of my friends own a Mac) PC. Recently we learned of the Chromoting feature of Chrome OS. This feature allows you to remotely access your Windows or Linux PC, in a browser window on Chrome OS. This way, my friends can remotely access their Windows or Linux desktop on their Chrome OS laptop. They will have the best of both worlds. Now, I don't think that Chrome OS will replace Windows (I'm still talking about my friends here, not the whole world). That 6% of people that I know will still need their Windows or Linux PC (like I said earlier).

I agree that the Chrome OS will be a successful endeavor for Google. However I do not believe that in the grand scheme of things it will touch Windows or Mac. Google Docs is a perfect example. I utilize Google Docs on a near daily basis. However I do not use it at all for any business, financial, or legal data. I know a few small businesses that use Google Docs exclusively, with the exception to financial data. Compliancy requirements and stricter "productivity-firewall-web blocks" are forcing the Medium and Enterprise level businesses to stay away from the cloud and continue to pursue their upgrades on Sharepoint, Exchange, and File Servers; all things that Google Docs could do for them, but fear of data theft is still priority to the C*O’s.

Google Chrome OS will be a great alternative to the smaller percentage of consumers who utilize their PC or MAC specifically for news, facebook, and pogo.com. (But will this segment of consumers be willing to learn a new OS?) I believe the remainder of consumers will continue to use a PC or MAC for their gaming, graphic design, and internet needs. I think small business will adapt their mobile needs to a more google friendly environment, while the medium and enterprise level businesses will continue to shun the cloud until the technology is made safer, and compliancy catches up with the technology.

Sorry, your world is just too small. How do you define successful? Used more than a MAC, Windows, Linux OS? Just don't think so. BTW: it's "whether", not the thing you're surrounded by when you go outside.
