More Information

Just a quick post to anyone stopping by my blog. I am wondering if there are many people other than myself who do more thru CLI (command line interface) instead of GUI (graphical user interface). It dawned on me that majority of everything I do on a computer is via CLI. Pretty much the only thing I do via GUI is surf the web (i.e. view Facebook, write this post -- which btw can be done via CLI, etc...) I am even getting to the point where checking email via MUTT feels more natural than thru a web browser or desktop mail application (i.e. Thunderbird, etc..)

... Am I the only one who does this?

To me, doing things via CLI vs GUI seems easier and faster.

With CLI I can:

  • transfer data faster
  • configure a webserver quicker
  • check email and setup automatic rules and filters
  • run backups and automatically secure copy and transfer to remotely hosted computers
  • publish content to the web (i.e. via Wordpress, Flatpress, DotNuke, Chronicle, etc...)
  • Design websites, style HTML via CSS, etc...
  • Manage MySQL databases
  • Instantly view disk usage, disk partition info, health, etc...
  • the list could go on and on....

And of course, all of these items mentioned above can be done via GUI... BUT... doing so is much slower, cumbersome, less accurate and less reliable.

So am I the only one who prefers CLI over GUI and actually does more in a shell vs a desktop screen? Drop me a comment and let me know if you prefer CLI over GUI or if you don't let me know about that too and why.
