Cost Efficient Way to Boost a Wireless Connection?

I'm trying to find a way to boost my wireless connection without it costing an arm and a leg. Right now I'm unemployed so I can't afford to go out and buy any fancy gadgets, cards or wires. I live in an old 1930's house with really thick walls. My desktop PC is on one end of the house and the router is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over on the other side of the house. There is absolutely no room in the room where the router is located to set up my PC. My ISP is AT&T U-verse and they gave me these crappy little usb powered "2wire" brand wireless adapters to connect wirelessly. My house is one of those walk-through the rooms house (no hallways) so I keep all the doors open in hopes that it will keep from blocking the signal but still I either get "Low" connection or it completely drops..... especially when my fiance's PC is on. If both PCs try to get online the connection slows down to dial-up speed or completely drops out.

Does anyone know of any free downloadable programs or tricks to boost my Wi-Fi connection? If I can't find a solution I'm gonna have to call AT&T to have a guy come out here to drill holes and run a wire all the way around the house..... which I'd kinda like to avoid if possible. :(

Thanks everyone! I was a bit skeptical about something as simple as tinfoil actually working but I was completely shocked when it boosted my signal strength by 50%! :D

Thanks a million to everyone for their comments! :D

I bought this WiFi antenna for my brother who was having a similar issue and it gave him a 100 % signal. If you have a Microcenter near you, i suggest visiting your local store ( www.microcenter.com )
or try ordering it

Do a Google search on "Instructable wifi". Plenty of home-made antennas that will help. Some even have templates. Also from :Make Magazine. Enjoy.

Awesome info! Thanks a bunch! I'm going to try out the aluminum thing first and if that doesn't work I'll try finding a high gain antenna. :)
