More Information

After looking at the new PSP Go you may notice that there are no game slots! The PSP Go will work by not buying games physically but downloading them. This does appear to be the next obvious step in gaming. No more discs. But is this a good thing?

In the next generation of consoles could we be living in a time where we don't need discs. Possibly for some of the smaller games but there are also games such as Metal Gear Solid 4 which are absolutely huge. A blue ray disc dual layered can hold around 50gigs so there is no chance that I would be able to download MGS4 to my Playstation 3.

As time goes on though and we find ways to store and write software easier to devices we may be getting some consoles in the future that have huge memories that will be able to hold a copy of MGS4. Then again with external hard drives being all the rage I wonder how long it will take for the major companies to get rid of Discs.

I think it is inevitably going to happen with the increaseing use of the internet and the direction that gaming is going in, but if we look at the economic problems this may lead to in the future. Stores such as Game station, Game and all those other stores would be driven out of business since they wouldn't have any games to sell. However I am no expert on the other markets that game stores sell to but I expect they will not be able to carry the whole store.

The CD industry has been effected by the online stores and we can expect them to some day go and be ruined by the online stores. DVD sales may also be the same. The signs are obvious with Sky+ for example you now no longer need to buy a dvd or tape to record your favourite programs. You can now also buy movies off itunes and full series of TV shows.

Also with SNES games you can hold all the SNES games that were ever made in rom form for up to around 1 gig. Maybe one day I could easily hold all the Xbox 360 games made on my computer. I feel that this puts into perspective have quickly technology is moving on and how soon we may be seeing these changes.

With data storage becoming easier and companies looking to cut costs we may see the entire market change for games over the next few years. This may be for the better or for the worse. The one problem being for me, my router is now refusing to connect to remote devices so if I wanted to buy a game now I couldn't. We can only wait and see!!

This is my first post on here. Opinions please!!

That would be convenient and inconvenient at the same time. I hate downloading stuff online. It doesn't always work as stated. Also if something goes wrong during the download, they can be a pain about letting you download it another time. Especially if they are a big company. I have had this happen a couple of times and never got the game or money back. I would prefer they would just go to flash drive. This would work so much better. And I wouldn't have to keep buying replacements for my worn out discs. I could also put some smaller games on my netbook. (Sorry if any of this sounds weird. I am typing this on very little sleep.)

I for one hate disks, I have probably close to 20 PC games (the good ones not bejeweled) and I hate having to search for each disk to play the games. I like steam quite a bit because I never have to worry about losing disks however I hate that I have to waste resources running steam when I could be gaming and folding at the same time rather than run a parent program. I would almost prefer thumb drives over disks that scratch wayyyyy to easily.

All I know is that I'm addicted to Steam.

consumer wise would you rather have disks?

For PC I still like a physical game disc so if the computer crashes I still have the game.

With everything going DRM, I guess I still personally would like a physical disc or something physical
