I've been thinking lately to apply at a course for Game Design so I did it. Now for those of you who might be interested in such a career here's some tips that I believe they are useful:
1.Think what part of the game you want to create
If you want to create games first you will need to play games a lot, and here I mean all types of genres. Now that is the first step in you're game industry study, after you played a while and have some ideea on how games are, you can move on the next step and try to get into the tehnical part which is actually the real first step you are making into this industry. Tehnical part is actually the "backstage" of the game and here you have some areas in which you can specialize:
I. Art area
In this area you actually need a good drawing skill and perspective view. You're going to work either as a 3D modelling artist, animation artist, or concept artist.
-The 3D modelling artist:
The 3D modelling artist basically what it does is placing the concept work into the virtual game world, after that the coders will begin to code it and make the animations interact with certain PC/console control devices.
-The concept artist
Concept artists do whatever the Game Designer tells them to, for example if the game designer tells the artist that the x creature has brown hair and it's big or a negative character, the concept artist will have to figure out what will that creature look like and start to draw it.
-Animation artist
This type of job usually reffers to a person who has a high skill in developing animations that are going to amaze the player. for the animation artist, the main stuff companies will need to see is you're skill in animating, they won't really care to much if you know 3d modelling or something else, because you apply for animation artist.
II. Coding area
This is where the tehnical part of the game development team is.
-C++/C/C# coder
All you're going to do here is code, code, code and... again code and I mean for hours, game coders are also one of the most important persons in the team, if one code gets wrong, the player might experience a crash right in the middle of a boss battle let's say. Also you'll need some math skills for this type of job.
-DirectX/Open GL coder
This is another type of coding that the game is going to need. This type of coding usually reffers to where the program will run on. Is it on the iPhone? Is it on the PC? Xbox 360? Playstation? or others? this is what makes them run on it. APIs(as they are called) are made to create interfaces for different devices.
III.From where it all starts?
" target="_blank"> You might be asking this question or not, still the ideea of a game, the story itself and the rules of the game are created by Game Designers. You will need to play lots of games if you want to become a Game Designer. Game designers usually need to have good if not epic story ideeas for games, they are the core of the game, and all other persons in the team do what the designer says mostly. Communication is the key to a game's succes as a game designer, you need to speak with the team and collaborate to them, you don't know who might have an epic ideea in the team.
Where can I learn more?
I placed some youtube vids here, hopefully they will embedd rather than just showing a link with someone from EA explaining this stuff more elaborate than I did.
