More Information

I'm currently utilizing a old Windows ME computer. I have the SDRAM to upgrade the ram from 128mb to a whopping 256mb. I have moved to an area with DSL finally. If only I had a computer with Windows XP. I soon hope to purchase one from a local shop. What is the mximum ram an HP computer can use to run Windows ME? It is an HP Pavilion that was built with Windows ME from the factory. I'm unsure of the model number and etc. Placing the ram in the DIMM slots is diffivult because of my large hands and the "cage" for the cdrom drive is in the way of me working on this computer.

I'm also curious if this computer can be upgraded to use Windows XP Professional without having a restriction by the cpu (Pentium II) and 256mb of SDRAM...

Win ME, Win98 and Win95 cannot handle memory sizes in excess of 512MB, because that is the maximum size of the fixed Win ME, Win98 and Win95 memory allocation table in the Windows kernel.

I have been servicing computers since the early 1980's, and I remember that the situation of installing more than 512mb of RAM in those era of computers was a common tech issue that I had to frequently deal with. This produced out of memory errors on those systems, because the 512mb memory allocation table filled up without anymore space or swap space for additional programs. When loaded programs exceed 512mb, then the out of memory errors occur due to available RAM memory exceeds the maximum 512mb memory allocation table gets filled (creating the error). Basically the Windows ME computer will run just fine until it exceeds 512mb of memory, and then errors out - not crashing the computer, but making you shut down some programs.

512mb of RAM is the maximum for Windows ME - providing that your motherboard and BIOS can handle 512mb of RAM.
