Yesterday at Apple’s Media Event, a lot of the rumors out were pretty accurate. The single most prevalent rumor happened to NOT come true though. That rumor was that the iPod Touch would come out with a camera on the back just like the iPhone. David Pogue interviewed Steve Jobs and asked him why they omitted a camera from the refresh. This is what he had to say.
Mr. Jobs reiterated what Phil Schiller, the marketing vice president, had said earlier in the onstage presentation: that Apple is really pitching the iPod Touch as a game machine these days. And to do that, you have to make it as inexpensive as possible.
He had to continue explaining that the iPod Touch was on the market as a gaming machine more than anything else. Not adding a new feature like a camera was a way to bump the price down of the hardware for people to purchase. As the interview went on, there was a series of questions about delays in products due to Steve Jobs’ absence.
“There are some things that I’m focusing a lot of attention on right now — to polish,” he said. “No, I don’t think we’re going to miss a beat. We have some really good stuff coming up.”
At the end of the interview, Steve Jobs reported that he “feels great” and acknowledged that he needs to gain some weight and he’d been trying to do so by eating a lot of ice cream to accomplish that!
