Today is Sunday the 6th of June, I have visited windows XP & Vista a few times to do fixes for members of my family, (no surprises there then).

It's near on Six months since my transition away from the bloated and buggy world of Microsoft windows and my thoughts so far are those of no regrets though I can say that for people with itunes or msoffice users I have got both of them running under Wine (free) but I suppose it's a comfortable thing.

It's been great not to have been battered by viruses and spyware this last 6 months and I hope I have many more months with no problems.

Before I go I thought it was well worth mentioning one of my Ubuntu Linux laptops got a sick hard disk and the amount of useful information Linux could convey to me was frankly amazing; it was telling me how many heads and sectors were going down, you should replace this disk soon.

Presto I backed it up and surely enough a week later it died & I don't remember windows being so informative just some disk checking and then a UN announced death leaving the user well and truly upset (we have all been there).

That's it for now........... ta taaaa.

@kai: "But Windows needs to start to be able to boot other OS's like Ubuntu and OS X "

Uh, no, Windows does not even need to be present in order for other OSes to boot. Windows is an OS (Operating System); OS X is the MacIntosh (Apple) OS and Linux is another, and there are other OSes, both active and inactive, like BSD, IBM's OS/2, BeOS, and others. None of them need Windows to start before they can boot.

I use Linux on my computers (Ubuntu as well as several other distributions), and though I do have Windows as well, it is not necessary to run Linux. I know many people who have Linux-only computers, and computers are sold commercially with Linux pre-installed. I have also owned an OS/2 computer, had BeOS installed on one, and used Atari computers running Atari DOS.

Linux and BSD are based on the UNIX operating system, which predates Windows, DOS, and Microsoft as well. In fact, "Windows" is not a Microsoft or Apple invention. The first Windowing system was written for a UNIX system in 1973. It was called Alto.

@OP - Welcome to the world of Linux! I'm sure you'll like it...I certainly do! Be sure to frequent the Help Forums (I'm -kg- there). Linux is a learning experience, but so is Windows.

Oh, & just for S&Gs, I'm getting ready to try out BSD, as well. You might want to check it out as an asides. I'm going to try a FreeBSD derivative called DeskBSD (a Live CD distribution) at first, then if I'm satisfied with it, I'll install full FreeBSD; mainly on my desktop, which I'm considering setting up as a server with 1.5 TB of hard drive space. I may go with netBSD instead, since according to what I've read, netBSD's focus is on network security.

If Carsberg made operating systems they would probably look like Ubuntu......

I can't live without windows it may be slow as a turtle in booting time. even for the most expensive PC's. But Windows needs to start to be able to boot other OS's like Ubuntu and OS X also they need to have less inconvenient programs pre-installed. Its just to much clutter and they need to start all over. When the next OS for windows comes out.

Kubuntu runs well on Ubuntu and you should learn about the combination of Kubuntu and Ubuntu rather than Kubuntu vs Ubuntu.

I agree Kubuntu UI is probably the best looking UI - I don't like the SUSE/RED HAT approach as in give us your money, Open Source !!!!! all the way!!!!

Pros of not using windows?

No viruses, bloatware, licensing fees, etc...

Are there any upsides to using Windows, for less than the cost of Windows 7 ultimate I could go buy a PS3 bundle with a few games, so in my opinion that rules out gaming since it's not specific to windows, is there anything else you can't do with Linux?

YOGESH, I think XP Pro was MS finest hour, and since then they have ............................ well I am not saying as there are people on here who can fill in those gaps.

Shannon thanks for those links I am on 9.10 but I will try UG to that flavour soon.

Tracy- I can say I tried Ubuntu inside of windows "yes setting up was childs play" so If you do have MS try downloading Unbuntu and installing it inside MS.

Once I spent all my time on the Linux side of the Dual boot then I decided I had to KILL BILL lol.I

You can always Dual boot if you need MS for your job.

I am not a Linux expert at all but Ubuntu 9.10 - the Karmic Koala was so simple to install I had to slap myself to make sure I was not dreaming and agree with Shannon I have not got viruses or anything on my browsing tool touch wood..................................

Any tips would be received with great thanks & not having the OS airbag go off every other day is great unlike the MS that has treated me with contempt.

Life without windows? Is awesome! Don't let windows block you from being outside with the real thing.

The new version of Ubuntu 10.04, Fedora 13, and most popular distros will have native support for iphone/ipod out of the box. See these articles:
http://www.webupd8.org/2010/02/confirmed-ubuntu-1004-supports-iphon...
http://www.downloadsquad.com/2010/02/28/ubuntu-10-04-supports-iphon...

That's what I like about GNU/Linux - it's moving very fast, considering it doesn't have the same amount $$ as msft products.

We've been using Linux at home for years now. Here are a few of the machines we use:

http://www.humans-enabled.com/2009/09/gnulinux-3d-gaming-box-no-mon...

It's very nice to not have to worry about my wife and kids getting infected with malware when surfing the Internet. It's also very nice to not have to be rebooting our computers all the time for windows updates.

GNU/Linux is bliss! I recommend it.
