Geek Out!

More Information

So I plugged in a Belkin USB Bluetooth adapter today. My bluetooth signal strength has been far from acceptable, so I thought this might do the trick. I opened up the bluetooth control panel to make sure my settings were straight, and then - ZAP. The screen grayed over and a lovely panel of text appeared in front of me. Kernel panic? Maybe? This is interesting... Reboot. Plug in adapter. ZAP. Screen grays.. This is REALLY interesting. I remove the bluetooth dongle... Reboot. No problems.

Looks like Apple and Belkin have some details to work out... Either that or I'm just holding it wrong.

Tyler Keeton. You seriously LOL'ed me there.

"yeah i am defiantly going with Mad Max here"

Defiantly going with Mad Max! That's hilarious albeit a bit confusing. Who are you defying by going with Mad Max?

Thanks for the comments! I checked and apparently it's supposed to work with Mac OS 10.4 and later. I didn't check before I bought it, but I had a hunch. With a brand like Belkin and a purpose like a wireless dongle... seemed simple enough to me. I tried it out on a PC and it worked fine. Guess that PC just got Bluetooth enabled! Even though I don't need it to be.. oh well. I'll do some research and buy one that I KNOW will work. I'll also read the Chinese instructions to make sure I'm holding it correctly. Dilemma- I don't speak Chinese. I'll just wear gloves then.

Belkin's issue. Is it certified to work with Macs? Try it on another Mac. I know my IOGear USB Bluetooth module worked for a WHILE on my old eMac, but with later Leopard updates, it would just shut itself off and not give the option to turn back on, forcing me to open the Bluetooth transfer wizard to make it turn on, then quitting it. What's worse is the fact that I was using an Apple Wireless Mouse (the one-button kind) with it, and I HAD to set the wizard to start at login to be able to use my mouse.

Wow. That was too much babbling.

So yeah, try it in another Mac, check Mac certification, and if it isn't and you can't get it to work, grab a different one. I'm sure some random PC you have would love to become Bluetooth-enabled.

I totaly understand about macs being buggy. I had to switch back due to many mac problems and after Steve Jobs talk about "holding the iphone wrong" I have lost all faith in apple.

Looks like Belkin have the issue here not Apple. If it only screws up with it connected but it's fine without then that's the obvious conclusion. Maybe it's not had the software updated for the current version of OSX or maybe it's just buggy in general?
