Nation Outraged Over Cop Taking Down 84 Year Old Alzheimer’s Patient

Denise Yost
NBC4i
August 12, 2009

An elderly woman with a weapon was taken to the ground by a Whitehall officer—and the incident was caught on tape.

Now, video of the incident has created new problems for the local police department as citizens from around the country question the force used.

The cell phone video ended up on YouTube—and the local police department said it has changed the way they work, NBC 4‘s Mike Bowersock reported.

Virginia Dotson was wandering the Walmart parking lot at 3657 E. Main St. the evening of Aug. 1 with a steak knife. She was telling strangers she would cut them and already had cut herself.

Whitehall officers were called to the scene, but some witnesses said officers used too much force in subduing the woman.

With regards and compassion to granny, I feel the cops did what they were trained to do. In such a situation, it is best not to underestimate "granny's" abilities.

A person who looks frail may not be. I've known some skinny people that looked like they couldn't punch their way out of a paper bag...until you tangle with them. I've also known some old people who looked like you could easily break them in half over your knee...until you get in the same situation (I used to work in a nursing home, and I'm no small person myself).

In such a situation, a cop just doesn't have the time to do such a complex, time-consuming evaluation. They can't exactly ask for a person's ID to determine how old they are, and they don't have the time to call in a panel of psychologists for a considered evaluation of the subject's mental acuity. They have to make snap decisions and then react appropriately.

Anything else carries the possibility of injury and/or death...for them, or one or more of the innocent bystanders present at the time...if they make the wrong assessment.

I think the cop acted perfectly well and someone really oughta keep a
better watch on granny
As for the idiot who wants to stab the cop...be real funny if granny shoves that blade in you, twit.
I am far from outraged.........

If ignorance is bliss some of the posters here are in heaven. A blade wielded by and 84 year old woman is just as deadly as if wielded by Chuck Norris. Who ever wrote this headline is a liar and a fool. It's only purpose was to infuse hysteria onto a false circumstance. Creating a false scenario in order to produce numbers. Anyone who allows this to happen is aiding and abetting social unrest for personal gain. Shame.

Could the crowd not, perhaps, have managed to be quieter? The situation was not helped by the hysteria which was in no way in relation to the poor old dear's possibly dangerous (to others?) predicament, it may or may not have been heavy handed but why was the 'noise' less about assisting the police AND the old lady than the need for the crowd to express their personal outrage. After all, I suspect the police are the ones who would have the lady in an ambulance being tended to, hopefully on her own, as it were.

Alzheimer’s or not, they needed to do something about the lady, she was after all carrying a knife in a parking lot and was threatening people with it. The cop tried reasoning with her for a second there, and then did what needed to be done. The thing I thought was completely unnecessary was the crowd of people corralling around the cop and the two idiots who were trying to film this incident. In my part of the country, this video would be breaking the law just as much as that old woman threatening someone with a knife. In my opinion, the cops were just doing their job, which is to keep the peace and keep everyone safe. He prevented the lady from hurting anyone as well as inflicting anymore pain upon herself.

WTF alright.
WTF is wrong with you people? Did you read the article? Are you stupid? When you get stabbed is it OK if the assailant is senile? Granny got what she had coming. Wave a knife at someone, get your but whumped. That's pretty much how it's supposed to go.

"A Nation Outraged" yeah some of us are outraged alright... at morons that write that kind of carp for a headline...

If there was any undue force this tape doesn't show it. It shows her up, it shows the person operating the camera waving the camera around, and it shows the woman on the ground. This is not evidence from which national outrage should flow.

if that was my grandma i would take the knife and stab that cops ass! lol

The Police have a very hazardous job and can not afford to be lax just because of mental ability, age, sex, or race if the offender has any kind of weapon. The mentally unbalanced and folks on drugs are unpredictable and more dangerous. I would not want their job! As always you will find a few "bad apples" - but look at the present Administration and show me ONE honest Politician!
