What kind of screen recorder would you recommend?

I don't like to use Camstudio since it ruins my audio when I choose to record from a microphone. So now I use Screen Recorder Gold but I still don't feel it meets my needs.

Also I don't like to use Camtasia Studio's Screen Recorder, not that it ruins my audio too, but it lags so much that I am pushed to making a five minute video when I choose to make only a minute video.

So go ahead and tell me what kind of Screen Recorder you'd recommend. Just as long as it is free.

I stay pretty much with opensource / freeware.
My two favorite free screen / session recorders are CamStudio and BB Flashback Express 2.6.9.
Since CamStudio was mentioned as something that is not suitable, I will elaborate on BB Flashback Express 2.6.9.

BB Flashback Express 2.6.9 is Unrestricted Freeware and it works with Windows XP - Windows 7 (32 bit and 64 bit)
BB Flashback Express 2.6.9 is very simple to use. Allows capturing of screen, audio and webcam simultaneously.
Outputs to several popular video sharing sites like Youtube.com and Blip.tv.
Does not allow any editing or addition of captions post-capture.
Its size is about 7.1 MB and it is 100% compatible with Vista and Windows 7 and will capture all Aero functions as well.

You just missed a good chance to get a shared screen recorder for free on GOTD on June 29. I got one and found it really simple and easy-to-use. It's worthy to try. Check out the thumb ups on GOTD and make your decision.

@DTM: Ya I'm looking for a good screen recorder for Windows and Curt I would be delighted to get the "Preview" but unfortunately I don't have Mac so that wouldn't do.

Whoops (?) you guys were referring to capturing on-screen videos and animated sequences, right?
Obviously, my previous comment was still images capture... I'll be leaving now.

Are you kidding? - It's Mac's "Preview", hands down! Even grabs parts of Flash animations, if you pull the "shutter" at the right time. As a designer, I've come to appreciate many ways an easy "grab" can be helpful. I do miss the cool shutter snap sound effect from previous Mac systems. (Must be getting old - I forgot what that keystroke was anyway...)

Well I've tried a large number of them and until recently CamStudio has been my recorder of choice. However my current problems are most likely related to whatever is causing my video software to perform poorly. So I can't say CamStudio is any real problem. And using the Xvid codec I can record just fine.

Taksi was pretty good but it was designed for recording 3D game screens and things like that. So when I tested it I tested it for that reason. I never tried it for simple screen capture.

ZD Soft's Screen Recorder wasn't too bad. I had some good videos from that, I just didn't like using it though.

VirtualDub has a screen recorder built in that's pretty good.

I wish I could remember the name of that other one, it's pretty good but has this annoying little watermark in the top corner of the video. Some slight cropping tends to take that out though, and cropping is necessary for my tutorials. :D It might have been HyperCam. Either that or My Screen Recorder.

I've only tried Camtasia and so far haven't found any problems with it...yet.
