Star Trek Review (3.5 out of 5 stars)
Directed by J.J. Abrams
The long awaited geek fest known as the newest star trek movie is finally out and it’s glorious. Abrams has crafted a film so entertaining and captivating enough the keep the star trek legacy on for another eon(it probably would have anyway) Being a stranger to the Trek universe myself, I was a little nervous going in, not knowing my Klignon alphabet backwards but the movie manages only to add fans and doesn’t keep on its esoteric trend. I think where Star Trek loses some fans to Star Wars is all the impressionable kids that were more likely fascinated with ‘Wars because it was more fantasy than science fiction. Anyone will tell you that Star Trek is more high-brow sci-fi.
We see how the adventure all began with origins of the original cast that would soon become household names. We have James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) playing the troublesome and arrogant playboy we all would assume he would have been. Spock (Zachary Quinto) is not only 1 note here as he is in most Trek episodes. Scotty (Simon Pegg) is the dubious genius that only could have played by Pegg. The casting is pitch perfect and at the same time they closely resemble their Trek alumni. The plot involves Captain Nero (Eric Bana) who seeks revenge for the destruction of his home planet and does so by destroying other planets in the coolest implosion effect I’ve ever seen. Through some dangerous endeavors the Captain of the Enterprise (Bruce Greenwood) is forced to abandon his crew and to fend for themselves. And then it’s the movie we all hoped it would be. Kirk takes command of the ship and Spock beams down to rescue people in distress and so on. I will say that the movie, although very good, did not wow me in any specific aspect. But it’s definitely one to check out and a more appropriate way to start the summer than that movie with claws I forget its name.
The movie never takes itself too seriously and never tries to sever ties to any previous incarnations but embraces it. There are moments in the film where we hear some iconic lines delivered with a comedic but a respectful wink. The tone of the movie is always tense but there are more comic relief moments than the trailer would suggest. We get top-notch special effects and there is probably more action in this film than other Trek films. This is probably the most appealing movie in the franchise to the general public. Surely some Trekkers (Trekkies is derogatory) will have issues but overall I can’t imagine anyone losing sleep over its massive inclusion of mainstream America.
