Geek Out!

More Information

Well, after being a hardcore Windows fanboy for many years, I have decided to do something that I once thought was unthinkable. I have asked for a Mac Mini as my belated grad gift, and intend on becoming familiar with the Mac platform. This is a very big decision for me, having been a Windows user for my entire life. I've grown much more curious about other platforms over the past couple of years, and am finally ready to give the Mac a try. It will by no means be my main machine or gaming rig, but a tool to allow me to experiment with OSX legally. I want to have tried out every software platform and be unbiased in my tech support.

I have also come to realize that fanboys are usually the people who miss out the most when it comes to technology. Instead of being objective and trying everything, they confine themselves with self-imposed restrictions. This method of thinking often results in not being able to enjoy technology of all kinds, and they miss out on great things that aren't on their preferred platform. Curiosity and willingness to try new things is one of the greatest strength a geek has, and if people don't allow for that, it will only hurt them in the long run.

Being a geek is all about curiosity, and once we stop being curious, we lose some of our edge as power users and fall into a single-product rut. It's perfectly fine to have a preferred or favorite platform (Windows being mine), but that shouldn't stop us from trying new things. We keep fighting with each other and burning bridges based on what products we use when we should be celebrating our love for technology, regardless of what company it's from. We are all lovers of technology, and we should stand together as such.

Wow, well said. I've thought this but never really put it into words: "fanboys are usually the people who miss out the most when it comes to technology." That's great.

Enjoy your Mac. I'm sort of like you: a Windows guy for a long time but now I prefer Macs. However, I still enjoy Microsoft products (especially Windows 7) and I'm not afraid to objectively recommend the best solution--Windows or OS X--to my unofficial "clients" (usually my parents' and grandparents' friends).

I also like how you said "once we stop being curious, we lose some of our edge as power users". Before I switched, I had basically zero OS X experience. But now, being fairly proficient in either environment, I can't tell you how much I've learned over the past few years about each platform, and possibly more importantly, how to make them coexist.
