The Future of Professional Music Production

I’ve been in the professional music production business for nearly 20 years now and I’ve seen many technologies come and go. The last decade has moved faster than any I’ve seen in the past and I believe that the next one will make our heads spin trying to keep up with it all. The days of large recording facilities that do it all are over, I believe, and new technologies have empowered many more people to dabble in the recording art themselves. I wonder where we should position ourselves as individuals to remain more viable and useful today? What niche or future need could be filled with the skills we have to offer? How does it fit into today’s society of social media, iPods, smart phones and other trending internet technologies? Put more simply, what changes should we make in order to keep our skills in demand and continue to make a living at something we've spent a lifetime learning to do? Where do you think this industry is migrating and what technologies do you foresee?

I would welcome any thoughts or discussions on the subject. It's always good to get a fresh perspective on things and I'm curious what the rest of you in the business think. Please take a moment to jot down some thoughts, even if it's just to say you read it. Thanks.

Personally I believe that the way we would stay relevant as individuals in the recording industry would be in the MASTERING.

I believe that Recording and Production-wise everything seems to be pretty affordable. Programs like Acid Pro and Reason have upped the ante with patches and plug-ins so when it comes to recording the only time you hear a difference in quality is in the Mastering of a track.

Everything else, as long as you have a midi keyboard and the right plug-ins, your sound can sound as pro as anything analogue you can buy.

I love it because now music making has become more portable than ever.

HERE IS SOMETHING TO CROSS YOUR FINGERS FOR!
