More Information

Time is really flying by. Today I thought ubuntu 10.10 was still in beta, but it turns out it was released on 10/10/2010. All the time I spent compiling from source, away from ubuntu, everything is.... automated... I feel spoiled using ubuntu.... the thing automatically recognized my ati 5000 series graphics card with no problems at all. There is a small out of the box problem with the right button on the touch pad of this one laptop though.

I think if i keep using ubuntu, i'll start forgetting alot of the cli commands that i'm usualy using to get things done, which is scary and a reason I normally don't use ubuntu, i mean, this distribution really makes things easy. ahhhh, fun times, wonder what's next~~

I got an update messege allowing me to install fglrx, I figured what the heck. after installing it, the xserver no longer loads. guess it's still a no go for the default fglrx drivers

Ah, alright. Thank you for this info, I remember reading something similar to this in a q&a forum. This info has an alternative though. I'm going to give it a shot when I get around to messing with video drivers on that computer.

You can try creating the appropriate xorg.conf file for the fglrx file
sudo aticonfig --initial --force
Installing the package doesn't do that part.
If that doesn't help then deleting xorg.conf and sudo apt-get remove fglrx
The default is a blank or non-existant xorg.conf, so if you remove it and remove fglrx it should go back to the state you had it in when it was working, failing all else.
