Nothing.
Well, that's not true. There are a lot of things that annoy me, but let me start off with the positive. I believe that i am part of the internet generation. I don't know exactly what that means to everyone else, but to me, it means that since i was a child, of around the age of 8 or 9, i have access to a computer. Whether it be a home computer, or one of the old BBC computers we had at school. When i started high school in the early nineties we were one of the first schools in the borough to get internet access. Back then, i didn't know how to explain the internet to anyone who hadn't used it, all i knew how to do was visit websites and read about movies, a year later i found out that i could download .wav files of my favourite movie sounds, and from there, it seemed limitless. Forums, chat rooms and noticeboards, that's what it was all about for me. I remember a parents evening where i was asked to be giving demonstrations to parents about the internet, and what we could do with it, of course it was very strict to what we could do, but, chat rooms were allowed. I was a big fan of IRC at that point, i still am, and as i was chatting in one of my favourite rooms, i was explain to parents that I could be chatting to all these different people, from different countries and it was instantaneous. Some of the got it, others didn't and most of them just didn't see the point.
The years came and went. I had a home connection in 1998, and probably bar a few months here and there, i don't remember ever being without an internet connection. I remember my home phone getting cut of when i lived with my mum, due to a high bill, and it never really phased me much. I then look at the other month when my home phone got cut off, due to another high unpaid bill, and it was the hardest few days of my life. I'm sure that none of this is of news to anyone, I'm sure that you all spend more time than me on line.
So, the things i love about the internet? Everything. The evolution, the connectivity, the freedom of information.
What i hate about it? The Addiction. I can't imagine living without access to my gmail, my google reader, my bookmarks of my favourite blogs and sites, you tube, I'd say facebook but at the moment i don't have one, my blog, i just couldn't see how life would be possible. I know it can be, i just don't even want to think about it.
Other than the addiction? I hate the way that the internet seems to have made the next generation dumber. Sure, there are the stand out few amongst the millions who embrace the chance to learn from this pure open source of information, but, the internet has spawned a new language ( LOL, ROFL, U, LUV ) or not a new language, just demised our own. It wasn't until i heard someone use LOL as a spoken word, that it really affected me. I might not be great with the English language (its the only one i speak and try to write in) and my Grammar and punctuation is terrible, but, at least i try.
I'm not against this TXT speak, it does wind me up a little bit, and im not to sure why, but i am against it being used in every day conversation, and i hate it being used in emails. I can see a lot of people that have this wealth of language and literature at their finger tips, and they waste it, poking people on facebook. It's so easy to spend ten minutes on a website and learn something new, and better yourself in some way.
Anyway, that's my rant, I'm sure that there are many like it, but this one is mine.
How do you feel about the internet?
Do you think that people are getting dumber because of the internet and its fads?
