It's almost midnight. I technically should be inside with my wife and dogs, in bed. I'll probably go there after I finish writing this. I love to write. It helps me to think. This morning my wife and I had a fight and it was the inspiration for this post -
Confessions. I'm almost 40 years old and I still wonder where the hell I am going? Where will I be in 5 years, 10 years, 20 years? When I was younger I thought that by now I would know. Now I know better. And with everything so dynamic especially when I inject myself into the world of "Web 2.0", "Social Media" and the like, I know better than to think I can possibly have a clue of what this world will be like! What will happen after "Pancake Media" comes and goes? Maybe jocks and jarheads will take over the web and we'll have Jock Media, or Jarhead media?!
When I was a kid we had an Atari 800. My father had the first online banking that I was aware of where you could connect to the banks BBS (Bulletin Board System). You could send messages to other people at that bank. I think it was Citibank. I thought this was so cool. Then you had BBS' everywhere. I remember the names of some of the BBS' that I would dial into. There was "The Batcave", "Fresh BBS", "Dirtbag Fred BBS" gave you jokes. All of this was DOS based mind you. I would stay up all night. I remember when I was about 14 actually staying up literally watching the sun rise while I was in our basement logged in to BBS'. I had literally been up all night. I was fascinated by all of it. Then I got distracted in life and after having had a strong passion for computers when I was a kid, along the way I developed a passion for finance, the stick market, money, and eventually landed back in school with an accounting degree and 2 years worth of computer science. Too bad none of the computer science from back then has any application in today's world! Basic (well it helps with VBA to have known basic programing language), Cobol, Fortran, and Pascal. Today there are so many languages I can't imagine how someone decides which ones to learn. Java, PHP, HTML, Flash! Seems like you have to know them all if you want to be a programmer these days.
I love my accounting and financial world with a knack for tech. I love to show other businesses how I am using the "Social Media" to help build my business. It has nothing to do with accounting, but it has everything to do with growing a business and that inevitably falls back on the accounting. Everything we do touches the finances. That's what I love about it. Understand the finances and you have the foundation for building any kind of life that you want. You begin to see how to formulate strategies for buying the "toys" you want and making sure you always have access to capital in order to ensure that you can keep up. I like to have the best.
The computer is still an escape for me. I get into an argument with my wife and hide away in here. She comes out with the dogs every so often and she's not talking to me, but the dogs are LOL! So they come running over to my office (it's a detached garage in the back of my house). This forces her to come over to me. Still she doesn't want to talk and I have no inclination to try and make her. At this point (and I can say this here because it's not Facebook where 100,000 of my friends will want to know more) I am not sure if I want this marriage!
I learn a lot from Chris about things to do on the internet. I started posting my own videos on YouTube, first because an Internet Marketing guy I hired told me I should. He told me to watch Gary Vaynerchuck's videos (
http://garyvaynerchuk.com/), and then in my explorations on YouTube to get ideas for what to do and how to do it, I stumbled on Chris' video on "
How to piss off a telemarketer". Reminded me of the scene in the movie Boiler Room when the newspaper telemarketer calls Seth Davis (coincidentally very close to my name) and Seth Davis schools the telemarketer on how to properly pitch people, then refuses to buy the paper after all. I realized - I have a personality, I can do this. That was about a year ago. I have about 80 videos - I have to balance my time between videos, billable time with clients, my wife, my dogs, and a tiny little social life.
So what's next? I am hoping that soon enough my QuickBooks and Excel tutorials will begin doing so well that I can afford to stay at home recording more videos, writing blog posts and developing more interactive tutorials - these are my new revolutionary tutorial concept. It's basically an e-book with "how to" chapters that actually teach you and give you step by step instructions. At the end of each chapter is a link to click so you can watch a video tutorial, and where applicable a link to download a spreadsheet or template, or something you can use to follow along with what we are showing you. I am trading services (bartering) with a guy who consults with companies to teach them how to develop trainings. So he is giving me GREAT ideas on this. My first one is going to be on QuickBooks For Real Estate.
So who knows where we will be in 2 years, let along 20. I know where I am right now and I've learned that this is what matters most. Living in the moment and really appreciating where I am today. It's a good life! If you have a roof, clothes, and food on the table you are doing great! If you have a computer (which you obviously do) then you are way ahead! Life's Good!
