Why California Should Be Separated into Multiple States

California is the largest, most geographically, racially, and politically diverse state in the US. The Northern Half of California is more Liberal, while the Central Valley is Religious/Conservative. The South is another subject that I could get more into another time, so for now I will skip it.

Lets start with the North's Geography, Mountains, Cold (most of the time), and access to the Coast. It has very Liberal viewpoints, for example the right of Gay Marriage (which has been pulled back because of Prop 8). Gay Marriage goes against the will of The Torah, the Bible, and the Quran. Because of this, and other major/minor differences in beliefs Northern California should be considered a separate State.

Moving on to the Central Valley, it has low lying agriculture communities and California's Capitol, Sacramento. The Central Valley is very religious and likes to protect that religious ideas, for example when I once visited someone had bought three acres of land just for a giant 'Yes on Prop 8' sign. Because of political/religious differences it has actually become a political region in California.

Overall, California is in need of separating into multiple states because of religious/political differences and instability.

And yes - I lived in Santa Barbara for many years.

In my opinion CA should not be split up into separate states. It's charter allows for succession from the union and if that was voted on by the rest of the United States then CA would be out of the pocketbook of the rest of the nation and we would all be better for it!

There would need to be a couple of months for the normal people to move out but other than that no one in the rest of the county would care.

I am not saying that all of Northern California is Liberal, I should know, I live there. What I am saying is that California inefficiently operates under its current legislation, so separation in the multiple legislations would be ideal

I don't know where the author gets his information about the whole of Northern California being liberal. Try living and working in the east part of the valley, the Sierra foothills and/or the Sierra Nevada mountains and one will find that folks are fairly conservative. I have lived all of my adult in rural foothill and mountain communities in Northern California and finding other liberals is like trying to find the mother lode under a rock. And the heat during the summers here is almost unbearable. While Northern California has the water, the rest of the state has the money. There has always been talk about dividing the state up, but it isn't going to happen. The geographical diversity of California certainly makes it an interesting place to live.

I never said they would stop aiding eachother, just they be put under separate state governments because of geography and religious/political differences so we can actually get something done

Based on this argument, should the United States of America split because of religious/political differences?

Politics should be about finding common ground and bringing people together, not separating them because they are different.

I am a fifth generation Californian. I grew up in Los Angeles and was an undergraduate in San Diego. More than half of the population of California is south of the Tehachapi Mountains (which lie on the southern most part of the Central Valley). I am fascinated how the 2 largest cities in California (no 2. and no.9 in the U.S. respectively) and their attendant populations could defy categorization and therefore be ignored by the author of this state secession proposal.

The idea, although quite attractive, is unreasonable because of water. Southern California and the San Fernando Valley are provided water from the north. The north would be delighted to be separated from this problem because it is being dessicated by its southern parts.

They proposed it in 1964 and the proponents were run out of town.
